Who watched Teen Wolf on Monday?

[personal profile] leisuretime 2014-06-25 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What did you think?

I liked it, but aside from having familiar faces and werewolves...it didn't really feel like Teen Wolf. I guess jaunts to rescue jaunts to Mexico will do that.

That was a really, really bad episode. Badly written, badly acted, badly directed, even the soundtrack was bad. And, yeah, it didn't feel like Teen Wolf. I am not sure what they were going for. I was thinking it was like a From Dusk to Dawn homage with Mexico, the temples and gangs (of hunters) but if that was what they were going for, they failed.

Though the rest of the season looks promising. At least it looks like they are returning to form. Teen Wolf isn't one of those hit the road and fight bad guys/things horror shows like Supernatural. It's more of "this town is screwed" Sunnydale type deal.

SO MANY SPOILERS

Copying this from tumblr~

I kind of liked it a lot? XD I mean, it was total garbage, really, and the whole ‘test’ thing that the Calaveras put the McCall pack through was ridiculous (all that so he could realize Kate was alive? OKAY???), and “Mexico” looked way more like idk the American midwest (and also a tv show set, haha).

BUT. I freaking loved the character interactions. I loved watching Stiles and Lydia argue like an old married couple. I loved Scott and Stiles being so damn devoted to each other. I loved Stiles working with Malia to have more normal human interactions. I loved the Malia+Kira dance (however much like the Erica+Jackson+Isaac dance, NOTHING WILL COME OF IT). I loved Scott doing his best to protect Lydia and assure Kira while he was strapped to the chair.

I FUCKING LOVE MALIA SO DAMN MUCH HOLY SHIT. HOLY SHIT.

Braeden being a badass who has no time for Kira and Scott’s teenage romance (tbh I was rolling my eyes too, even though I like Scott/Kira, I’m just like guys this is not time with this, even though hahaha all shows and movies do this). Braeden and her ginormous gun. In amongst claws and katanas and nunchakus, it’s nice to see a slightly more practical weapon. |D

The de-aging of Derek is a really stupid plot move imo but also a great idea if all you’re after is torturing him (have I mentioned that I hate Kate? I really do). I’m not looking forward to where this is going tbh.

I was expecting to see more rants and rage about the *~male gazey Kira/Malia dance.~* Haven't seen it, but I also haven't gone looking for it, so I'm assuming it doesn't exist and that makes me happy. Because I'm tired of cynicism and always taking the worst views of things.

I run in the more SJW circles of Teen Wolf fandom and from what I've seen, there was more "this is awesome but sigh no follow through" than there was "fuck this male gaze bullshit!"

This review pretty much sums up all my feelings about it.

http://www.tv.com/shows/teen-wolf-2011/community/post/teen-wolf-season-4-episode-1-the-dark-moon-review-140355003664/

Also it refers to the Calaveras as "the Mexican Fratellis" (from The Goonies) which I found so weirdly accurate I hurt myself laughing.

Overall I liked it, but there were a lot of little things I didn't.

Thought it was a little unrealistic that all of them drove in Stiles' jeep all the way from NoCal to Mexico. That's a long-ass trip. Anything to rescue Derek, right? And now they have to drive back with Baby!Derek?

Where did Stiles and Lydia get the card they showed at the door to get in? And how did the others get in?

I didn't get the whole torturing Scott to make him prove himself thing, but I did love everything else in the club, especially Malia and Kira dancing then fighting.

I didn't mind the Stiles/Malia as much as I thought I would*. I like that Stiles is teaching her how human social interaction works. I thought it was sweet when she said she'd never leave Stiles behind. About damn time Stiles is that important to someone! (While I love their bro-ship, Scott used to always put Allison before Stiles)

I loathe and despise Kate and am still pissed that she's back. I hate that she somehow de-aged Derek (in order to manipulate/control him?) and hope that doesn't last long.

I liked Braeden and am glad she's still around. Hopefully no one hires her to come after the pack.

I can't remember all of my reactions. I think I covered the main points.

Looking forward to the rest of the season, especially Chris, Sheriff and Melissa.

*I was convinced that Stiles and Malia had sex in Eichen House, which I didn't like for several reasons. Dylan said at a con that while it was implied they slept together, and were supposed to, Dylan didn't want that to happen so they didn't actually have sex. That makes me like their relationship more.

I pretty much didn't like it at all tbh. Which sucks because overall I LOVE this show, but I got almost nothing whatsoever out of the premiere. It just felt like a terrible waste of time to me. (The writing was bad even for this show, some of the acting was embarrassing, a lot of it just felt forced, too. Plus it was boring.)

Hopefully the rest of the season is better. It LOOKS it, but at the same time...I'm not even the slightest excited about the new cast members, and the thing with Derek...are you for fucking real Jeff Davis? I'll watch, but if it continues to be this awful indefinitely then not sure how long I can put up with it.

I liked it better than you did, but the younger Derek thing was straight out of fanfic. Seriously, I have read a handful of fics where Derek is de-aged because of a spell and that was the first thing I thought of :/

lmao, I KNOW. I don't even typically read de-age fic (I think I've enjoyed one out of all my fandoms) but it's certainly a popular trope and that was the first thing that came to mind. There are so many other tropes you could have went with Davis.

And apparently this isn't the only one they're going with, this season. I'm worried.

Ha, yeah, TW....

Well, it had a few moments of fun, Lydia and Stiles being the stand-out bits, for me. I do love them. The whole 'must teach Malia how to be a human girl' thing is so fucking *stupid*. She knows how to do makeup, and dance at a rave, and be in high school, but Stiles has to 'teach her' to...what, exactly, now? Their 'romance' is so very forced, and hello, Anya, thought you were killed in the last season of Buffy.

The whole 'Kate is alive!!' torture thing was just...stupid. What *is* it with that show and the electro-shock torture porn? So gross. Plus - who in hell funded a four day trip to freaking Mexico? Gas alone would be nearly 1000 bucks in that freakin' Jeep....

Kira being bad-ass is always fun, Stiles attempting to fix his Jeep was fun, Braeden (sp?) is awesome, and even *more* attractive *with* the scars but the whole 'why didn't you kiss your girlfriend?' convo at the jaguar temple was out-there idiotic.

It was fun to watch online with my buddy and snark. It was *not* 'good television'.

Makeup and dancing are easier than social graces imo.

Unless you're actively ripping out throats? her only 'lacking' social graces that i could see were 'i'd leave so and so behind, they're wounded/injured'. And also - not people she's known and loved for years, so...not really that big of a surprise?

She's supposedly been nothing but a *coyote* since she was eight or something. The simple fact that she's upright and eating with a fork and knife is a bit beyond the pale, but doing the sexy dance at a Mexican rave so she can throw off the 'bad guys'? Whatever.

She shouldn't be able to go to high school either. She missed several years of school so how can they put her in classes with everyone else? I really like Malia but the writers aren't doing a good job with her so far.

They really aren't. I mean - sure, were-coyote, that's awesome, more supernatural things, i love it. Little girl who changed and accidentally killed her family, traumatized and reverting to her were shape to cope - awesome! Bring on the trauma and the healing!

But they skipped all that for 'sexy romance girl' for Stiles and...Anya-esque statements that are just...meh.
*sigh*

I liked it, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the credits with just as many female characters as male. I liked Stiles and Lydia bickering. I liked the whole group (pack?) working together (although, if I was a hunter, I think I would start to worry about different supernatural creatures banding together). I have decided that the writers are trying to tell us that being part of a hunting family makes you batshit. I kind of liked the dancing, but I really enjoyed Kira and Malia kicking ass. I liked Stiles' and Malia's interactions (that's progress). I liked Stiles both sort of knowing how to fix the jeep and sort of not knowing. I liked the tentativeness of Scott and Kira. I liked mercenary Braeden. I was not wild about Predator!SpikyCreature, but I thought Scott's roar (growl?) was funny. I was relieved by teenage Derek (even with the cheese factor) because I legitimately thought he was going to have spike through him or be horribly mutilated, like missing limbs or something.

I have decided to make up my own backstories for how they got the car and the money because the show will probably not provide them. I think the money came from either Chris Argent (to make things even with Derek), Peter (once the story came out about Kate, arson, and the insurance guy, there could have been a pretty big settlement) or Lydia. The card could have come from Chris Argent, Deaton, or Morell.
