I hear you on song fics... I used to love them, but now, not so much. I do love filks, but even then, some filks... really stretch it, and/or it's clear the person didn't really get the song and/or the story.

I don't know what filks are. I googled it and read the fanlore page on it but still don't understand. Are they songs written about a show?

They're fannish parodies of popular songs.

Some of Weird Al's stuff might be considered filk (the Star-Wars parody of American Pie, I'd say.)

So regular songs but parodied to a show/movie/whatnot?

Yes, generally a filksong uses the tune of an existing song and put new "parody" lyrics to it.

(Not all though, there are orginal filksongs: the constant is that it's "fannish" content" in the lyrics.)

Ah, okay. I have heard those but never knew the name.

I wonder if it was mostly a Harry Potter fandom thing? I've seen a lot of people be confused, so maybe they weren't that big... or it's just an old school internet thing.

It's old-school conventions, pre-internet fandom. People would sit around with their mimeographed song sheets and have filk singalongs.

I wish this still existed; it's exactly my thing.

Oh man, so do I. This is something I still do with friends ALL THE TIME. (We randomly wrote half a "Piano Man" parody about kink memes via Twitter last year, and were going "WRITE US SOME PORN, YOU'RE ANONYMOUS! WRITE US SOME PORN TONIGHT..." And I just earlier tonight came across the lyrics I wrote for a Jefferson Airplane parody I recorded awhile back about Secret of Mana. XD

You know I'm going to finish writing that in my head all night.

Well, this dude's in the mood for some tentacles,
And you could be doing it right.

I was particularly pleased with,

She said "Babe, can you write me some PWP?
I don't really care how it goes...
If it's smutty and hot, then we don't need a plot -
Just get those men outta their clothes!"

Ohhh la, la la, dee-dee da...
