What are some fic types, plots, or themes you hate?

I can't stand song fics. It always seems like the songs are picked randomly and never really go with the story. Thank God they have fallen out of favor.

I also can't stand fics that have two characters pining for each other while every other person knows they are. I don't mind pining but I hate when an outside character is all, "Really you don't know???" or *knowing smirk* but they don't bother to tell the pining person what is going on.

What about you?

I hear you on song fics... I used to love them, but now, not so much. I do love filks, but even then, some filks... really stretch it, and/or it's clear the person didn't really get the song and/or the story.

I don't know what filks are. I googled it and read the fanlore page on it but still don't understand. Are they songs written about a show?

Also I hate when - what are the calling them now "slow burn fics" do no accumulate in incredibly hot sex. Like, dude, are you trying to torture me.

I like both those first ones if done right. :P But slow burn fics that skip the sex scene? ┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ﾉ︵ ┻━┻ What kind of monster do you have to be to do that? Especially if your fic is rated E. No amount of violence or cursing warrants an E!

I hate those because they never account for the fact that characters would not act the same way without whatever background they have canonly. Also, NOT EVERYONE HAS TO BE A JOCK OR NERD! There are shades in between damn it!

genderbending. i just don't get it. and it sucks when i see a summary that sounds very interesting, only to see "genderbend" when i read the tags. oh well, at least people always tag for this, so i can avoid it easily.

i also never read historical aus because historical fiction doesn't interest me. fortunately, you can tell it's one just from the summary, which means it takes me two seconds to scroll past.

AGH! I get you on the genderbend especially for porny fics. I only read those because it is two characters I think are hot doing filthy things to each other.

Hm. I don't know if I have read many historical fics. I do know that it annoys me when it is a historical fic but people are wayyyy more accepting of homosexuality then I think they would be.

I agree about songfics. I get the whole, "hey this song inspired this story" and leave it at that. I definitely get inspired by songs but I haven't written a songfic since middle school. I hate when lyrics take over the story.

I also hate when just because the characters are opposite genders and super close means they are in love and everyone else calls them out for it. No that's not true. Because I hated it in real life when my best friend and I would get that from EVERYONE. Oh you two are so in love blahblah. No, we are not. We are just really close and that's it. Nothing is going on between us.

Fics where the characters seem to have gotten together, but then I check the chapter number and I'm only halfway through.

Cue the other half of the story being stuffed full of ANGST, and high school level DRAMA, and MISUNDERSTANDING that could be solved in ten minutes if the characters just sat down and communicated.

Also fics where rape is love. Like instant hearts and bunnies everywhere love.

I'm really not a fan of cutesy future fics in which the main characters are boring domestic old married couples who live in boring tedious domestic bliss. Doubly so when they are *actually* old. (Now, fics where the characters are old but have a whole new - or continuing - slew of plots and problems are awesome, but 'happily ever after' is fucking BORING if it's really nothing but resting on laurels.)

Maybe that's partly because my fandoms are such that I've become very attached to the idea that most of the characters will die violent and tragic/glorious deaths after several years of workaholic bliss before they leave middle age, but whatever...

Lately I'd say 99 % of all fics. I can't stand AUs (unless very little has been changed from canon), genderbending, or level-headed characters being turned into weepy little twits or abusive idiots.

"The raven-haired alpha pushed his alpha cock into the ivory-skinned omega's tight little omega ass." Yes, great, I might have forgotten who was what, if you weren't constantly reminding me.

But above all, any fics containing photo manips. Yikes, eww, and an instant back button.

Mpreg, this can sometimes depend on the fandom but I've never been able to read it outside of crack!fic regardless.

A/B/O mostly just confuses me, and the summaries kind of weird me out so I stay away.

Pretty much all AU's, some can be fun(and I've read a few I've liked) but for the most part taking the characters out of their very specific circumstances doesn't work for me.

Oh and anything that makes out jealousy to be cute or proof that character A really loves character B and they should be flattered(big ol' NOPE to that).

I detest will-they-won't-they drama where it's all just... drama. Like one is hung up on his ex! The other got drunk, will he cheat? All that soap opera stuff.

I see this happen in fics where like, the characters get together but the author wants drama... and doesn't realize they WOULD have drama if they wrote an ACTUAL PLOT. Like, have things happen and the characters respond! But instead, there's a bunch of circulatory thoughts in their own heads while they moon over their issues.
You can have lots and lots of conflict without all of it being ~drama, I swear.

Eh, the only time I've actually enjoyed it when a third party knew there was pining going on was when they weren't telling because they had an interest in what was going on [usually they're dating/want to date on of two people] so it at least makes sense why they wouldn't tell.

Other than that...when fics have dialogue that forces things along in a way that's too obvious. Like, say they need one character be jealous of a relationship: "Oh, I'm great. Oh and btw, X and I are totally dating." [Paraphrased, but it's usually even worse than that, sadly.]

That is so fucking stupid. My rl friends/family are all about telling someone if so and so likes them, if they think it will be mutual and/or so and so is a good person. All that sniggering and not talking is just infuriatingly stupid.

I don't mind fic where the only plot is internal character growth or relationship-building, but there has to be some kind of real interaction for me to care.

I hate the "everyone knows they're in love but them" trope. I've been one of "them" before and it can make a friendship super awkward when everyone is always going, "So, are you dating yet? Why not? You should be dating. You're into each other. Yes, you are, don't lie."

Really, pretty much anything that revolves around just about everyone in the known universe knowing a character's (or a couple characters') feelings better than they do puts me off. I've seen it handled in ways that work for certain characters, but I'm so sick of it. I always want there to be a plot twist that everyone else is wrong.

Most songfics suck anyway... the majority I've seen aren't really stories, just 1 kb of text wrapped around the actual song lyrics. Even a drabble has more of a point.

I kind of hate it when non-canon pairings are presented as canon, and there's nothing explaining how or why this particular couple even looked at each other, let alone got together. I'm not against non-canon pairings in general, but make me give a shit about yours. Yes, even if I'm a fan of the pairing.

Anything OOC in a serious story, if there's no point to it. A strong female character in canon would not fall apart like a weepy damsel in distress if she fought her usual battles.

Thinking OOC automatically makes a good parody only because "lololol he/she would neeeeeeeever do that in the story".

Heh, some of my earliest fanfics are songfics with an intro and an ending cobbled together. Can't believe I actually thought it as the epitome of my writing. XD

For me, it's the "real-world OC taken to another world" fic. I've seen some fics where it can be done well and I applaud them for doing so, but most of the times it's just...bad. Annoyingly bad at that.

This is the main reason why I don't write my self-insert fantasies. That, and potential embarrassment on the part of the characters. I have this thing where I imagine my favorite characters to be slightly embarrassed by all the real-world attention they're having, and I somehow feel weirdly embarrassed due to contributing to said characters' embarrassment.

God, I hate smirky "You idiots, you are so oblivious!" fics. For one thing, *I* am completely oblivious to any secret crushes my co-workers or friends might have for each other, so it makes me side-eye anyway, but it also hits my embarrassment squick.

I think by now it's well-known I am less than fond of genderbent fics where a popular slash pairing gets both halves genderswapped. I generally dislike this because I fell in love with the pairing as males, and, because I am unashamedly straight and like dicks in my porn, there has to be at least one dick.

I also unilaterally dislike most modern AU settings, like highschool/college AUs, coffeeshop AUs, even a bit more historical in Regency and steampunk AUs would get ignored by me.

One thing that I recently discovered that I can cite is fics where OC characters start to take over the whole story. I recently tried to read a GoT fic, and a couple of OC secondary characters turned up as helpers. Then another one turned up. And then another. And then they started turning out to be some sort of gods pretending to be mortals. And barring letting Rhaegar cut Gregor Clegane's head off, they have taken over the whole damn plot.

So, TL;DR, I hate when Sueish OCs slowly take over fics that were originally billed as being about the canon characters.
