I had interpreted the changes with Shae to have resulted from the show's giving her more capability for insight and badassery, thus having to have Tyrion earn her wrath by attempting to send her away so she'd testify against him. He'd have been unable to ignore his culpability in the whole thing, whether or not it was anything like what he intended, and might be conflicted about hurting her unprovoked. Having her attack removed that doubt. I actually considered it a pretty good way to resolve a situation that was much more cut-and-dried in the books. Leaving out Tysha, on the other hand...
