Because there are numerous examples of Cersei being a horrible awful person in the series whereas Tyrion's character is often white-washed to keep his snarky, rootable fan favorite status intact, often at the expense of other characters, most notably Sansa.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Has "white-washed" changed its meaning again while I wasn't looking?

At the expense of Sansa? If anything they softened her so people would like her more (like her refusing to kneel).

philstar22: (Drunk Cersei 2)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-06-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't think it was clear in the books that it was her. To me it was either her or Joffrey, but it wasn't explicit either way. The show did change it to make it explicit, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It was definitely Cersei. Why would book!Joffrey do it?

I saw people complain about both.

I suspect it's actually because Shae was an important character, and Robert's bastards (except Gendry) were throwaway characters. With established characters, people get more attached to the dynamic between them, including (or especially) in their death scenes.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen people complain about Cersei's whitewashing (the slaughter of the bastards, plus the assassination attempt on Tyrion). Anyway, the show made Cersei go from 'very dark grey' to 'somewhat lighter grey', but Tyrion went from 'grey' to 'still blinding white'. In a show that prides itself on moral complexity, no character being black or white (with a few more minor exceptoins), etc. the former is more excusable than the latter.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. In the early books Cersei is black as pitch. I actually liked that they added some complexity to her in the early episodes. (Holding back any comments about current season.)

[personal profile] fs_lurker 2014-06-25 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought they kinda went at each other at the same time.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I watched season 1, but I thought it was implied that Cersei encouraged the bastard-killing to avoid any question about Joffrey.

Idk what you mean by 'nobody'.

I know many people who were annoyed with that change.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-06-25 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, was it actually just Cersei killing Robert's bastards? I thought it was implied that Tywin had something to do with it. I looked at the books just recently, and that was what I took away from it.

tbh though, I don't know why anyone cares either way. They've done a lot of things to make every single one of the characters in the show more morally grey than they are written and I think in every case it's a positive change. Jaime got his dubcon moment... what exactly makes people assume that Tyrion also won't get a similar moment later on? He's a dick to the dwarf girl all throughout AFfC, right?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be a much more convincing argument if the writers/directors believed it was "dubcon."

Umm, there were plenty of people upset that Cersei's been toned down, but like others have said you still realize that she's not exactly a good person. Show Shae was nothing like Book Shae, but they still had her killed in a manner that really didn't make much sense with her character development on the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pissed about both, actually. They've ruined all the Lannisters (including Jaime after the whole rape debacle) besides Tywin, as far as I'm concerned. The show is terrible at portraying basically every character.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Show will never win with ALL fans, no matter what choices they make.

For myself, I had no problem with Tyrion killing Shae for the reasons he did in the book - finding out about Tysha and then right after that finding Shae in his father's bed...he snapped. I'd still have found him sympathetic.

I'm just astounded that anyone chose not to complain about Cersei being humanized, since from what I can tell she's incredibly hated.

Also, perfect choice of picture for the secret. Love it.

Shafting Cersei's mass infanticide off on Joffrey was the beginning of the end for me, with watching GoT. I'm usually not insane about keeping things perfectly neat and canon, but that really ticked me off. And then they had Joffrey slapping her and throwing his weight around, boo-hoo poor Cersei, and I noped right on out. I still follow the show, but I no longer watch it. It sucks because I was sincerely enjoying it up until that point. Hearing about all of these further character assassinating decisions [Jaime/Cersei rape scene, etc] makes me glad I did, though. It's one thing to change events and rewrite lines, but I personally can't forgive significantly altering a character. I could just barely handle 'legitimately caring and nuanced' Shae.

YMMV, as always.

I saw the reverse. I didn't mind the changes to Cersei because the fan misogyny would get way out of hand if she were as awful as she is in the books. Meanwhile, many Tyrion stans still thought he was a swell guy even after murdering Shae in the books.

u living under a rock? because that's complained about A LOT, A LOOOOOT

and we all hate it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I had interpreted the changes with Shae to have resulted from the show's giving her more capability for insight and badassery, thus having to have Tyrion earn her wrath by attempting to send her away so she'd testify against him. He'd have been unable to ignore his culpability in the whole thing, whether or not it was anything like what he intended, and might be conflicted about hurting her unprovoked. Having her attack removed that doubt. I actually considered it a pretty good way to resolve a situation that was much more cut-and-dried in the books. Leaving out Tysha, on the other hand...
