IMO, the only time 'manpain' applies is when a female love interest is killed off only for the purpose of creating angst for a male character (fridged).

It's annoying in fandom because people make it only about the man and his angst rather than about the person who actually died. Like "aww poor baby he's been through so much" and female character that got killed off is just an afterthought.

That's why 'manpain' gets a bad reputation. It's not that people hate when a man shows emotion over some tragedy, but the fact that other characters were sacrificed purely for the reason of making a male character more sympathetic.
