Bad example. Crime and Punishment is a terrible book. Up there with Anna Karenina and Moby Dick.

Well, I enjoyed it. Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite writers.

But feel free to substitute it for any other classic book.

There may not be fanfic that's as objectively good, but there's plenty I've enjoyed more.

Are you sure? Are you SURE Dostoyevsky is one of your favourite writers? Are you sure you aren't just saying that because it makes you sound really smart?

It's ok, anon. We all have that phase when we're sophomores, or just being sophomoric.

Why can't Dostoyevsky be one of the ayrt's favorite authors?

I feel like your attitude is not really all that different from the attitude espoused by OP, or by many others in this thread.

I'd rather substitute it for a classic fanfic

My current favorite piece of writing of all time - and in my opinion, one of the best works of literature ever - started out as a fanfic, and while the author reformatted the later parts to be wholly original fiction, they are still "fanfiction-esque" in that they are published serially, for free, on a fanfiction archive that accepts original fiction/has a section for it as well. That "fanfic" has its own fandom (sub-fandom?) and is way, WAY better than the vast majority of published fiction I've encountered.

It's a story with a lot of complex themes around politics, family, personal relationships, culture/culture-clashes, sexuality, lots of mindfuckery and dark and complex psychological themes, etc. - and if the author ever tried to published it professionally, it would be classed as "porn"/erotica and summarily dismissed by the vast majority of the literary population as little more than smut with some pretty plot attached.

Game Theory. It was originally a sequel character study spin-off of some original characters from the author's Rise of the Guardians fanfics, but grew into its own fantastic fairy tale story. It's sequel, The Court of Five Thrones, just started.

The original Rise of the Guardians fanfics (From the Darkness We Rise and Into Shadows We fall) are also very good. That said, Game Theory and the Fae tales series makes very little mention of them, and the author is reformatting the entire thing to have no fanfic connections/be completely original fic anyway. So if you don't want to read the original fanfic but want to know the context for Game Theory, then the author's new/retooled background story is a short original story, The Nightingale and Tehro the Mouse-Lad. It effectively summarizes the relevant parts of the original fanfics, in the context of original fic and characters instead of fanfiction and pre-existing characters.

That said, pay attention to the warnings on all of them. I am not kidding, these fics are dark as hell and that's at least half their appeal right there.

Maybe you're not very good at reading complex texts.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Or...maybe not everyone likes those books.

I love 'Moby Dick;' I think it's absolutely wonderful. But I don't see the point in getting upset with someone for not thinking the same.

Whaaat? CaP was terrific! I had a really hard time keeping all of the names straight, but the plot and the writing were both enjoyable and objectively good IMO.

If you are seriously proposing that 'Anna Karenina' is bad fiction, you need an education, stat.
