It's one of my least favourite things too. I really value reading as exploration, seeing through other people's eyes. And if you only read fanfic you are getting just as narrow a viewpoint as if you restricted your reading to anything else (including Literature or nonfiction).
I admit OP sounds judgemental, but I'm really not. I accept that other people value different things, and that some people who "only read fanfic" live far richer lives than I ever will.
