Oooh, that's a pretty library. I love walking around libraries so much, just spending time with the books and coming across some new stuff that I never would have found otherwise.

Also you're a snob.

Reading published fiction does not mean you are reading good fiction. Because I have read tons of fics better than Twilight and/or various other books I read when I was younger.

I feel the same way (that it's sad if you only read fanfic), but I also know that I could easily have gone the same way myself if I'd been 15 years younger.

When I did discover fanfic, I didn't pick up an original novel for about 3 years. I still read fewer original books than I did. Before that I used to read several books a week at least. I once worked out I'd easily read several thousand novels in my lifetime - before I discovered fanfic.

Fanfic is great and I wouldn't lose it, but it's also a shame that younger readers are missing out on that breadth of experience. Read both, I say! But fanfic is so addictive, so I completely understand it.

There's nothing I love more than curling up with a good book.

However, as I work full time, have two kids, and about as much responsbility as your average adult, I don't always have time to sit down with a book.

Fanfic is much easier to pick up and put down, and still to get a reading fix in at the end of a long day.

I'm still unconvinced that one is inherently better than the other. There's plenty of utter crap coming from both, especially as we enter the age of the self-published ebook. There's also plenty of gems...if you know where to look.

I knew I recognised that library. I was only in it briefly, our art class had a flying tour of Trinity College on the way to the National Gallery for the actual lesson part of proceedings. It's a really gorgeous library, though.

As to the secret itself, I think you can get quite a bit of life experience from both? I've been reading more or less everything that passed my way since I was a kid, and there are things I can readily identify as having been learned from books, and things I can identify as having learned from fic or conversations started in the wake of fic, and things I've no idea where the hell I picked up at all. Fic has an interesting advantage in that you can often talk to the author, which is a way of sharing their life experience with you, whereas with books, especially older books, there's a window on viewpoints and ways of life that are defunct now or that you're unlikely to encounter a living embodiment of (baring vampirism or immortality). Books have a slightly less ephemeral feeling, like there's a hope they'll last longer, while fic often gives a sense of more immediate contact and engagement with a viewpoint. There's pros and cons either way.

So, in a sense, I partially agree? I think reading all of the above and more probably gives someone a more rounded contact with things, but depending on tastes individual people might prefer one or the other as a primary means. Fanfic gives you slightly different flavours and approaches to things, there's a set of tropes and standards in fandom that isn't matched by the publishing world, so it is two different outlooks and, ah, permissible topics of discussion? There's value in both, from an education and life experience standpoint, is what I'm saying.

To everybody lacking in free quality literature...

I don't care if people only read fanfic that much, because frankly at least they're reading something and spending their time engaging with stories with some level of critical thought (there is always a minimum level of critical thinking/meta that goes along with fanfic because you're making decisions about what alternate imagining of a story you want to read about, and why/why not some alternate versions aren't 'canon' or 'in character'). This is good because, frankly, a lot of young people don't read at all.

You read enough fanfic, you're going to come across book recs and are probably going to pick up a book at some point anyway. You don't read anything at all, well - there's not a lot that's gonna change that.

It's one of my least favourite things too. I really value reading as exploration, seeing through other people's eyes. And if you only read fanfic you are getting just as narrow a viewpoint as if you restricted your reading to anything else (including Literature or nonfiction).
I admit OP sounds judgemental, but I'm really not. I accept that other people value different things, and that some people who "only read fanfic" live far richer lives than I ever will.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My field of study and work leads me to read large amounts of nonfiction. I'd say I'm far above-averagely educated when it comes to the humanities, and I have stopped reading published fiction years ago. Mindless fanfic about Captain America kissing his long-lost boyfriend though? Yes please! I know what emotional buttons I like having pushed and I seek that out.
Not everyone who doesn't read published fiction does it because they're an idiot who doesn't know better. I know I've grown tired of literature. Still get excited about nonfiction and philosophical works, sometimes poetry, but novels and plots and settings? It's all been done, and done better. I'm only interested in fiction for my emotional fix, and that's easiest with fanfic - it's accessible, free, gets to the point. I'm pretty sure none of this strips me of my education and life experience.

I just can't stand people who get snobbish about turning up their noses on published books.
an argument I saw was that you can't find certain genre mixes with gay/queer characters and that makes fanfiction superior. Wtf.

If you sought it out as original fiction, even if you don't buy it, maybe you could actually make these niches more economically feasible outside of fan fiction. And it's definitely There!

And while fanfics can be very diverse for kinks and certain dynamics, in my fandoms they're very restricted to certain POVs- american teenagers and college aged ppl.
Really good fanfics are often by older folks with more experience, tbf.

Not that the mainstream book world isn't restrictive as well (to 40 something white guys), but it's easier to get cross cultural literature without having to invest into certain fandoms- there's just more human experience out there, and so many people who have given recs for good stuff.
And as someone who doesn't always want to read romance there's a lot more gen/not romance focused stuff to read than in any fandom I encountered so far.

Library!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
In regards to the secret - I fall into the idea as long as you have a passion to read I don't see how it should matter what it is that's being read. I, myself, read anything and everything (from fanfics to technical tomes for my work).

In reality - I had to comment because of the picture. It makes me want to have a week long camp out inside the library just to indulge in the books.

I laugh when I read people getting up in arms like this. They clearly don't realize that a good portion of the "published literature" is.... fanfiction.

Take five minutes and have a looksie at this post (http://bookshop.livejournal.com/1044495.html) that discusses a WHOLE LOT of published fanfiction...

That's pretty extreme. I get the annoyance if someone thinks that reading only fanfic is some sort of special accomplishment but other than that, I don't see how it's reflective of their intellect...?

Hmmm, +0.5 I guess?

I agree with your basic sentiment, but people can read what they want to read. If they don't want to read published novels it shouldn't matter to anyone other than themselves. If they aren't interested, they aren't interested. For fanfic, you're reading about characters you already love with stories/tropes that do it for you in ways novels might not. It's easy to understand why people stick to fanfiction.

But it's when they put down novels, and people who read novels, claim they are trash or boring, and that fanfiction is so much better and all that, then I can agree with you.

To be fair, it goes both ways. (novel readers who feel they are better than people who only read fanfic).

Point: people like to read what they like to read, who cares! Also, just because you don't like something (a book or fic) doesn't mean it's crap. It means it's not your cup of tea. Other people will love books that you hate. It's subjective.
