I have been reading and writing fanfic for about sixteen years, roughly half my life. I have encountered a variety of people in my fandoms that I would have never met and learned from without fanfic. It was the cultural touchstone that I needed to meet people from England, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Peru, Czech, Poland, South Africa - people of very different races, religious backgrounds, cultures. I never would have moved across the country to follow my dreams. I never would have tried Indian food or avocados or any number of Middle Eastern dishes.

I grew up on a farm in the middle of a poverty-stricken state, and fanfic (and the people that I met from reading/writing it) broadened my horizons more than any number of "classic" books could ever do. (I've read plenty - I have a degree in English Literature.

You have every right to look down on it and judge those than participate, but I also have every right to say that you're wrong. The experiences and pleasure that I get from reading (and writing) fanfic have enriched my life rather than detract from it.
