This secret makes no sense to me. People who are still in school are obviously reading things other than fanfiction. It's called homework. People not in school are free to read whatever they want to in their free time. It's called free time because it's free. If they're supposed to be extending their education or whatever the eff, maybe they didn't get the memo.

Fanfiction got me through some pretty dark times. It was a comfort to me because of what it is, in all its varying forms, and for qualities anon either dismisses or doesn't seem to recognize.

I was thinking the same thing. Unless you never went through a school system the odds are you are or have already spent a significant portion of your formative years reading plenty of things that aren't fanfiction. Maybe the people who only read fanfic in their adult free time do so as an alternative to that. It's not as if books are the only way you can learn about culture and life.

But what is it with fandom and this incessant need to be so judgmental about the often harmless ways other people choose to enjoy their free time.
