Fandom grieves in mysterious ways. I thought it was a nice tribute the first time it scrolled by on my dash, and didn't give it another thought after. Also, dogs can feel loss and sadness, which is difficult to depict without linking it to a clear emotional response. Also, it's a cartoon character, so there's that.
