A lot of that skeeves me out, too, yes.

Mmm, there are certainly pieces that have made me uncomfortable. On the whole, though, I see them as tributes or just as a way to share grief with the rest of the community.

Also, Scooby is a cartoon character and I'm pretty sure he's cried in at least one canon.

Especially if it doesn't even look like a great dane.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Still gets its point across. Some people just suck at features.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This one actually does make me a bit uncomfortable, whereas that watercolor of Harold Ramis walking into the distance with Slimer just made me really sad (I don't care if I was manipulated).

Got a link to it?

and it's weird. that doesn't even look like scooby.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
and if scooby fucking doo could talk i don't see why he couldn't cry.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagree. They're awesome.

MANIPULATE ME, FANDOM.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
lol they can't talk either. come on.

Fandom grieves in mysterious ways. I thought it was a nice tribute the first time it scrolled by on my dash, and didn't give it another thought after. Also, dogs can feel loss and sadness, which is difficult to depict without linking it to a clear emotional response. Also, it's a cartoon character, so there's that.

For me, Kermit set the precedent. So as long as it's respectful, idgaf.

I personally find this kind of stuff really narmy

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
...dogs don't cry?

Tell that to those idiots upstairs, who apparently allow their pooch to wail on and on at 5 in the morning.

I'm mixed on the art. It's a tribute that's a mix of touching and bizarre.

Dogs can make sounds that are like human crying as a result of emotional distress. But as I understand it, their eyes only water in relation to irritants. Dust and so on. They can't produce tears because of unhappiness.

What's that fanart about?

I take it someone in someway related to the Scooby-Doo fandom died recently, or something?

Eh, the idea of fans making tribute images like that generally bothers me a little less than companies doing the same: http://www.wbshop.com/product/looney+tunes+speechless+print+honoring+mel+blanc+lntcpsp2.do

(Can't really put my finger on why that one bothers me, but it might have to do with WB selling the piece instead of allowing it to simply exist as a tribute.)

That said, there are fan tributes regarding real-life events that cross the line of respectability, and those ones do bother me quite a bit.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly my thoughts. When fans do it, it might in the worst case scenario be a sympathy thing to get attention, but it's more likely than not sincere. When companies do it (and sell it as merchendise) they're making money off a tragedy. And whether or not that was the original intention doesn't even matter anymore, they're making money off someone's passing, and that's low.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes. It also feels like you're diminishing a person to their job which seems really sad. Draw them or something.

Softcore devil's advocate here

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I can relate. It depends, though, because I've seen a few that actually made me feel better. Like ... it's a huge world, and most people don't give a fuck that some person who worked in entertainment died, but that person added something singificant to my life. Without knowing them, without ever having a conversation with them, they became someone I esteemed and wanted to listen to. The fact that they aren't going to keep being creative, active, having things to say, and keeping me company in a way as I go through life, feels like a personal loss. Even though there's obviously a lot I didn't know about them. Anyway, my point is that sometimes, in those cases, fan tributes with characters make me feel like I'm not mourning alone. And so I step lightly around them when they aren't for me, or rub me the wrong way.
