This pisses me off too. So I just refuse to live my life like that. I might check my phone regularly, but I also don't feel guilty about going a few hours without checking it, or taking my sweet time to reply to non-urgent messages.

Facebook messages annoy me now though, because you can see when someone else has read your message. So I just don't read my messages in Facebook - I wait until I get an email notification with the content of the message. It might be a little thing, but it helps me keep sane and like I'm a bit more in control of my online communication.

Agreed. Although I'm on my phone a lot, if something doesn't need an urgent response then I'm not going to feel obligated to reply right away. I have friends who think you're being a dick if you don't respond to a text within 10 minutes, but that's ridiculous and I've given up caring.
