Do you hate anything about modern life, F!S? If so,what?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-06-26 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
To me it's the expectation you have to be constantly available, on multiple communication platforms, all the time. It drives me nuts. I just blatantly refuse it. I don't even have a smartphone. And it just irks me it's only going to get worse. I'm the kind of person who might call you back 3 hours later after a missed call, and not be online half of the day.

That bugs me, too. Not only do I not have a smartphone, but I also don't use my cellphone much and I hate texting. People have this expectation of really quick responses when you're texting, even if you're not texting about anything important. Ugh! If it's just to check in on someone, send an e-mail already.

Re: Do you hate anything about modern life, F!S? If so,what?

Yeah I'm not a fan of this constant need to be available all the time either.

The assumption that all of the details of our online lives are assumed to be data for corporations really, really bugs me.

Also this idea that facebook is supposed to 'mimic real life'. Bullshit. It does not, has never and will never mimic face to face interaction with another human being.

The expectation that work is the only thing in your life. My husband's hours are technically 7-4:30, but he actually works 6:30-5:30 or later. And he's expected to answer emails at home, and come in on Saturdays if they call. And travel. It's a good job, with great benefits, but the constant "above and beyond is the new standard" pisses me off.

Oh god, yes.

And the idea that just living and being happy and making your partner happy isn't enough. You always have to be the best at something, the most creative or the most active or the most educated. You have to contribute to society in some indefinable way that apparently includes having a job you hate, but doesn't include growing your own vegetables or giving your time and money to charity.

This, adding in that I hate that you're expected to have a career and want to climb up in job ranks, and if you don't, you're lazy and unambitious/unmotivated.

I don't want that. I just want a nice, quiet job that pays the bills so that I can focus my mental energy on what actually makes me happy, which is my art/crafts, cooking, and volunteering. I'm not lazy - I have lots of things that I do. They just aren't job-related, because I don't want my job to be my life.

I hate how damn gullible we've become. Where every internet news sob story is believed. And if you say, "Nah, this sounds fishy." You are called a monster. Never mind in the past few weeks more and more cons have been coming out into the light.

There's nothing wrong with being a little skeptical. I hate how any and all doubts in anything is automatically labeled as "victim shaming." What about protecting yourself from being a victim of a con?

This. Look at the KFC incident - people were calling for a nationwide boycott (nevermind that KFC can't really help what one franchise does) over something that appears to have been fabricated. And... people don't get that the internet was private back in the day, but it's not anymore because people stopped using fake usernames and started using their real ones. Especially teenagers, which never ends well, because they're teens. It's just sad.

This is probably not quite the type of answer you were looking for, but those automatic flush toilets. I HATE THOSE THINGS SO MUCH. It's one modern "convenience" that I wish didn't exist. It seems like half the time they flush while I'm sitting down and I have to jump up really quick so I don't get toilet water spraying all over my parts. It usually takes like 3 tries to be able to sit down without it flushing on the ones that do that. And sometimes when I actually need it to flush, it won't (although a lot of times there's a little button on the wall that you can push if it doesn't flush).

SO. DAMN. ANNOYING.

You should have been there the first time I tried to use a paper seat liner on an automatic flushing toilet!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I hear you. Worst well-intentioned device ever. If it's gonna splash up that much water while you're freaking sitting, it might as well be a bidet.

I'd hate to be an elderly person who gets surprised by the random flush.

I think the automatic bathroom sinks are worse. You get, like, a teaspoon worth of water to wash your hands, and any attempts to get more result in jets of water that splash your shirt or barely wet your hands. :/

This pisses me off too. So I just refuse to live my life like that. I might check my phone regularly, but I also don't feel guilty about going a few hours without checking it, or taking my sweet time to reply to non-urgent messages.

Facebook messages annoy me now though, because you can see when someone else has read your message. So I just don't read my messages in Facebook - I wait until I get an email notification with the content of the message. It might be a little thing, but it helps me keep sane and like I'm a bit more in control of my online communication.

This is probably totally a "kids today" thing, but I hate how little freedom kids seem to have. Of course, it started in my generation - my friends could never do anything after school because they were in a bajillion activities. I just wanted free time, so I wasn't. And I mean, there's nothing wrong with kids being in a bajillion activities if that's what they want and it's good for them, but... what happened to kids being kids?

Lack of privacy, especially online. And little people seem to care about it.

I kind of hate that I had to add my parents to Facebook because even though I didn't add them, my siblings added them, and some of my friends even added them, so if I ever commented on their posts they were going to see anyway. Also, I can't comment on friends' public posts (and some friends make everything public, so annoying) because I don't want the whole world to see my thoughts on things. I'm a private person. And there's no privacy.

I just got a smartphone and I feel you. I won't respond to most things immediately and yeah, it's frustrating when people ask why I didn't respond, uh dude, I was working?

Oh man

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
What don't I hate about modern life, really?

The constant need to be available to other people is something that bothers me too.

I also believe people these days have to do too much work, there are people working several jobs or working long hours and never getting a chance to breathe or do anything but go home and go to bed after work. That just isn't healthy, and I'm not even sure most of those people make that much money. I understand that people need money and they have to do what they have to do, but I know it's not healthy. I wish people didn't have to be so dependent on money to live.

I really hate how huge of a consumer culture we are, and I hate how we also have this throw away culture. It's so wasteful. People focus too much on "stuff" it seems.

I think the thing I hate the most though, is people's knowledge of the harm were doing to the environment, but not caring. I've seen talk of solar panel roads that are supposedly completely possible, but you know that's not going to happen until we are dead from pollution or a war over oil shortages. And more bees are dying, but are people going to do things to help? of course not. All the people with the money and the power to change these things will do nothing so long as they can make money.

Gosh that sounded so whiny, sorry. Man there's just so much that really makes me upset about it though.

Malls. I fucking hate malls. They are designed around wasted space, they are terrible for the environment, and their whole goal is to make you feel bad about yourself so you spend money on crap you don't need.

Stupid malls.

I have this same problem. I use a "dumbphone" and I tend to take a while to text back or call, and I tend to scroll through newsfeeds on Facebook for maybe an hour or two a day, that's it, and I visit Tumblr every now and then. I never understand how people can stand to be attached to all that 24/7. I remember once reading a post on Tumblr only semi-joking about "[followers/fandom people] who aren't on Tumblr all the time when they're awake, which I heard is still a thing???" and just. Ugh.

This also goes for people who complain that my Facebook. I mean, you can peek directly into my mind by reading all my commentary on all the news and other articles I post, but by all means, complain that I don't post what I had for lunch.

I don't own a smartphone, either, or use non-fictional social networks. I'm a private person and I don't like being accessible all of the time. What really pisses me off is that I've seen some talk about how it might affect my employment opportunities, because employers like being able to find an applicant on Facebook to examine their whole life and how they interact with people, and they assume you have something to hide because you don't post your business for everyone to see. I hate everything about that idea.

What you said, surveillance and lack of privacy, watering-down of individual rights, corporate takeover of everything, unprecedented levels of governmental corruption and incompetence, rampant wealth inequality, human-driven climate change, pollution, environment-damaging asshattery in general, overpopulation, and endlessly redundant and derivative entertainment.

Not only do I hate the expectation that I am available 24/7, I hate the fact that I can bother people 24/7 so easily. Say I realize late in the evening that I need to tell someone something by early the next day and rather than wait and call in the morning (because I might forget) I'll send out an email right then. That used to work fine for situations where I wanted to get a message to someone that they could read at their leisure, but now so many people get email over their phones and they leave the alerts on, my late night emails might get responses right away and I'm all "No! I was trying not to bother you!" Same with texts, because texts are somehow more immediate than calls. People might ignore a call they can't or don't feel like answering, but they're probably going to look at a text sooner than they're going to check their voicemail. (Half the time, no one checks their voicemail anyway - they just call me back and make me repeat myself when probably everything they needed to know was in my message and there was absolutely nothing we had to discuss and they've just gone and interrupted whatever I was doing by making my phone ring because they were too lazy to check voicemail.)
