I honestly think you're confused about what defines American food. That's okay, a lot of people are. There just aren't really "American" foods at all - or rather, the foods that are "American" are regional. Different areas have different foods, from clam chowder to Cajun to hotdish and so on. And a lot of those regional foods are inspired by European foods (and from immigrants of other countries, too).

Point being, American food is not defined by supersized cheeseburgers and french fries. Seriously. You should actually try different "American" foods, maybe you'll be impressed.
