OP is probably making fun of the "I chose the name because it sounds cool", though. People are always posting that screencap to prove that most of Evangelion's religious imagery is there just because it looks cool and different to Japanese viewers.

It's possible that Anno is an idiot and also that, separately, Evangelion ends up being deep.

I'm not saying it is deep. But I'm not sure that Anno being an idiot means we should stop thinking about it.

I don't know about deep but Evangelion sure made me feel really uncomfortable. I've not watched any of the movies, just the series proper and yeesh.

I also really don't like it, which is apparently blasphemy.

I didn't even liked it either. I don't understand why tumblr puts Shinji in a golden pedestal. He's a stupid, wimpy character. Asuka's a bitch. Rei is a creepy doll/clone (I don't understand why the fans love her either and how she tops every "Top Anime Women" lists). I liked Misato though. I liked Toji, Kensuke and Kaji though.

LOL what the hell kind of explanation is that? Evangelion is a Greek word, it doesn't "have to do" with Greek. And wtf is Christian language??

It's a word used in Christian theology and tradition. It's not totally crazy to call it a Christian word if he's specifically using it that way.

Anyway, who knows how much of that is translation and how much is him?

Honestly, I've always liked the idea that the Christian/Western religious imagery was only used for aesthetic purposes. I was pretty young when I watched the original series but I remember violently hating all of the 'gnostic gospel allegory' theories that were circulating at the time--seeing them get shot down was deeply satisfying. It still is, actually. :P

As for Eva being deep...I dunno. I've always felt the real draw of the original TV series run was seeing a deeply depressed man working out all of his issues through a giant robot anime that had, beyond all reason, become enormously popular. Yes, there are scenes that are just embarrassing to watch, there's pretentiousness all over the place, and it ends with the main character loathing himself so much that he literally is unable to do anything for a good portion of the endgame...but, that meant a lot to me, when I was a depressed, pretentious, useless teen. I wouldn't say it says anything ~deep~ about the nature of humanity or whatever, but it is deeply emotional in a way that tends to make fans extremely...protective, I think.

haha, im with you man. Eva is a beautiful representation of the human psyche, and I really think Anno is more than a little bit enlightened. choosing a silly name seems to fit with that to me.
