As for Eva being deep...I dunno. I've always felt the real draw of the original TV series run was seeing a deeply depressed man working out all of his issues through a giant robot anime that had, beyond all reason, become enormously popular. Yes, there are scenes that are just embarrassing to watch, there's pretentiousness all over the place, and it ends with the main character loathing himself so much that he literally is unable to do anything for a good portion of the endgame...but, that meant a lot to me, when I was a depressed, pretentious, useless teen. I wouldn't say it says anything ~deep~ about the nature of humanity or whatever, but it is deeply emotional in a way that tends to make fans extremely...protective, I think.
