I guess you could argue that he killed Shae in self-defense, but idk, to me it just seemed like the whole knife thing was just an ass pull from the writers so Tyrion wouldn't look as bad for offing her. Iirc Shae didn't pull a knife on Tyrion in the books? I could be wrong though.

Yeah, this. In the books he killed her for revenge, basically; she didn't pull a knife on him at all. I get it that different adaptation and blah blah, but they're trying too hard to make Tyrion into a less morally gray character than he is in the books, and it really shows.

The problem to me was that in the books it was pretty clear that Shae was with Tyrion only for the money, whereas in the show it looked like she might've actually liked him, so the whole knife thing made zero sense to me. Besides, it's not like Cersei would've just let her go if she refused to testify against Tyrion. If they had let the scene play out like it did in the books it would've made more sense, but maybe they were afraid of the fan reactions?

The writers kind wrote themselves into a corner with this one. I kind of want to give them a pass on this one because, really, book!Tyrion is a lot less sympathetic and a lot more creepy than show!Tyrion. Book!Tyrion ain't no Peter Dinklage. I like Peter Dinklage. Book!Tyrion.... eh, I like reading his chapters, but man does he get creepy sometimes.

They were setting it up perfectly for Shae to turn on him because she cared about Sansa, which would've been much better motivation than her shallow book characterization. I'm not sure why they just dropped that thread.

See, that would've made a lot more sense than what they ended up going with! They made Shae a lot more complex and likeable in the show, so to have her revert back into her book version at the last minute was such a stupid and disappointing move on their part.

Damn, that would have been really cool. Why did they have to keep THAT part of the book the same/similar, when they've changed so much else? It honestly didn't make sense for Shae's character. Even if she was angry at Tyrion and trying to get back at him, nothing about her suggested that she'd try to sink Sansa too. :(

IKR? I figured that had to be what they were setting up when Shae got all protective over Sansa and I was so excited, not only because I think it would've been great motivation, but because female solidarity is scarce in this story.

yeah in the show she stayed with him through danger, turned down huge amounts of money ( a litteral BAG OF DIAMONDS) to stay with him. And just clearly liked him a whole lot, so it felt sorta whiplashy at the end when its like "oh or not? yeah I'm a traitorr!!! grr"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
erm... are you really all falling for this? she was obviously in with varys to set tyrion up and later free him. what for - we don't really know. But there's a backstory to it. Her pulling a knife on him is her *knowing* that he sees her as a traitor, and there's no chance she'll convince him otherwise. But being the strong woman she is she won't just let him kill her obediantly like desdemona did. the othello parallels are obvious, yes?

Ding ding ding. D&D are terrified of tarnishing Golden Calf Tyrion.

Shae didn't pull a knife on him in the books, but they didn't include the Tysha reveal in the show, because it's not really important to the overall plot. That was going to change how things played out pretty seriously already, so they had to change something in that particular scene to keep him remotely sympathetic.

(And seriously, strangling someone who was obviously reacting in fear? Not exactly lily-fucking-white, here.)
