I think it's more to do with the way he killed her in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Their entire relationship is different in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They shouldn't have changed that then.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So they should have kept shae as a manipulative prostitute who was only using tyrion for money and status?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, how dare a young, poor prostitute do her Job and have sex with a guy for money and a means of survival.

It's Tyrion's fucking fault for not seeing the relationship for what it was.

I guess you could argue that he killed Shae in self-defense, but idk, to me it just seemed like the whole knife thing was just an ass pull from the writers so Tyrion wouldn't look as bad for offing her. Iirc Shae didn't pull a knife on Tyrion in the books? I could be wrong though.
pengychan: (Mad Hatter)

[personal profile] pengychan 2014-06-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. In the books he killed her for revenge, basically; she didn't pull a knife on him at all. I get it that different adaptation and blah blah, but they're trying too hard to make Tyrion into a less morally gray character than he is in the books, and it really shows.

[personal profile] ziltoidianrapture 2014-06-27 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem to me was that in the books it was pretty clear that Shae was with Tyrion only for the money, whereas in the show it looked like she might've actually liked him, so the whole knife thing made zero sense to me. Besides, it's not like Cersei would've just let her go if she refused to testify against Tyrion. If they had let the scene play out like it did in the books it would've made more sense, but maybe they were afraid of the fan reactions?

The writers kind wrote themselves into a corner with this one. I kind of want to give them a pass on this one because, really, book!Tyrion is a lot less sympathetic and a lot more creepy than show!Tyrion. Book!Tyrion ain't no Peter Dinklage. I like Peter Dinklage. Book!Tyrion.... eh, I like reading his chapters, but man does he get creepy sometimes.

They were setting it up perfectly for Shae to turn on him because she cared about Sansa, which would've been much better motivation than her shallow book characterization. I'm not sure why they just dropped that thread.

[personal profile] ziltoidianrapture 2014-06-28 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
See, that would've made a lot more sense than what they ended up going with! They made Shae a lot more complex and likeable in the show, so to have her revert back into her book version at the last minute was such a stupid and disappointing move on their part.

yeah in the show she stayed with him through danger, turned down huge amounts of money ( a litteral BAG OF DIAMONDS) to stay with him. And just clearly liked him a whole lot, so it felt sorta whiplashy at the end when its like "oh or not? yeah I'm a traitorr!!! grr"

Ding ding ding. D&D are terrified of tarnishing Golden Calf Tyrion.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Shae didn't pull a knife on him in the books, but they didn't include the Tysha reveal in the show, because it's not really important to the overall plot. That was going to change how things played out pretty seriously already, so they had to change something in that particular scene to keep him remotely sympathetic.

(And seriously, strangling someone who was obviously reacting in fear? Not exactly lily-fucking-white, here.)

because Show Shae was much different than Book Shae. She was developed much deeper as a character and D&D switching her last minute to make her more like Book Shae (whom I don't even remember pulling out a knife attempt on Tyrion, rather I think she begged for her life) so that they could continue making Tyrion this heroic type instead of his original characterization annoyed quite a few people.

Not to mention the show left out the very important convo between Jaime and Tyrion that was the reason he headed up there to kill Tywin to begin with.

This.

Although I can't fault them for leaving out that conversation and the one that results from it, as it now spares us all hours and hours of, "Where do whores go?" And thus hopefully Tyrion's arc next season will be less deadly dull.

I only hope that they remove/revamp Penny as well. Please no riding pigs around. Please please.

Let's hope so. ADWD fills me with embarrassment squick, and not for the right reasons.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
They couldn't do it for Joffrey's wedding because apparently there are real animal cruelty issues (duh) and it's not worth CGI-ing. So probably the same will apply for Penny.

Oh god yes. I never want to read that phrase again.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
but a lot of people were also annoyed at the white savior scene at the end of season three - but then it turned out that that cringeworthy scene had been in fact a commentary - a glimpse of how dany sees herself, and this season we got to see how deeply wrong she was in that self-image.
There is going to be something like this next season, explaining Shae.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Shae doesn't pull a knife on him in the books, rather she begs him not to hurt her instead. Her actions in the show make no sense in the context of her show characterization (they spent seasons up to that point developing her and making her much more caring) and the entire scene was filmed in a way to make Tyrion look justified in what he did. It's just yet another example of them whitewashing Tyrion to be the perfect good guy which is really irritating.

[personal profile] visp 2014-06-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think people are more upset about the canon deviation than anything else. Although considering how they changed her character, it probably wouldn't have worked to have the old storyline.
greenvelvetcake: (Default)

[personal profile] greenvelvetcake 2014-06-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't know why they changed their relationship and basically Shae's entire character only to have it end the same way. Nothing about her last few appearances made sense for her character. Why bother changing her character if it wasn't going to amount to anything? Why not, I don't know, tie it into the whole "where do whores go" and have Tyrion go looking for Shae instead of Tysha?
