Some people do. I...don't. Mainly because I've had to run backgrounds at a former job and, frankly, learned from that how hard it can be to be sure who you're reading about is actually the person.

you mean like sock accounts?

Eh, that too. But it's more that I've seen just how often people will get false flags for being a sex offender...when that wasn't actually them for me to just...not have any real trust on information being reliable from a internet search.

[Also, as a by the by - if you have a common name you can almost bet anyone who runs backgrounds for a company has had to wade through sex offender registries to make sure you aren't one the results that came back from them.]

Thanks, this's interesting. Well, I suspect my company just checked criminal records even though it's not excatly allowed.

Well, how it usually goes is that if someone's name [and only their name] is on a sex offender registry then it comes back on the criminal records, but then the person doing the check at the company has to go and double check it on the actual registries [since they're online and most bigger companies will have access since they tend to be open to the public, unless that has changed].

Most of the work in background checks [on the company's side] is double checking what's been found in the records and making sure that it's actually legal to hire the person in question since different crimes have different lengths of time before they can be hired into positions that have access to certain types of information.

So they probably do double check if only because they want to be sure of the legalities - and unless you're only going to hire people with names only a handful of people are ever going to have you'll have to check the registries at some point just to be sure or you risk legal trouble that can cost the company tens of thousands of dollars at least.

tl;dr: Companies do follow up on seeing if the information they get back is accurate since not doing so can have some seriously bad legal repercussions for them.

Thanks again!
Looks like a lot of work checking the records. My name+surname is one of the most common combinations, so, huh.
In my country criminal records are closed to the public, for better or for worse.
I wonder whether companies check any other information, like college or University records. I know that some forge their records, and I'm not thinking about the Suits series. :)

Ahh, yeah that's a little different.

Well...if they're like most of the companies I work for, they probably don't unless they have a reason to think it might be forged. Once you've held your first job in the field then your college records become far less important than how you preformed on the job.

That's true, experience is more important than education to the most companies!
