That was probably the intended reaction to the character. Him and Reiner are those two dudes who aren't really worth being very interested in (well, Reiner is rather more interesting than Bertolt, whose existence is pretty much entirely background noise) up until the moment of the reveal. It's supposed to shock you and catch you off your guard.

Personally, I don't really understand how you can consider him your favorite... A character has to have way more development than he does (due in part to that near-total absence of screen/page presence!) for me to like them. But hey, different strokes!

I can totally understand someone having Bertholdt as a favorite character if they enjoy or relate to his personality. What really confuses me is how Marco is such a an immensely popular character in fandom when he *spoiler* gets killed off early in the series and basically only existed to encourage Jean.

Because he's cute and easy to pair with an already popular male.
