I had a long relationship (way too long, in hindsight) with a woman who found it very easy to justify herself, no matter what she was doing. To this day I don't know exactly how many things that she told me were lies, or just how much money she stole from me. She was very good at compartmentalizing her brain so that she could say--even believe, on some level--whatever she needed to be true at that moment.

I appreciate that you're consciously trying not to become a person like that, because believe me, it's pretty shitty.
