the sex scenes being disappointing is an understatement
I too started reading the book in the hopes of seeing man-on-man boning, but noooo instead we got... that

(god this book is probably one of the most boring books by Rice
and yet, it still holds a special place in my heart, and I still remember everything about it 10 years later)

maybe your cuz was also heavily into yaoi/gay porn but didn't wanna scare you?

"maybe your cuz was also heavily into yaoi/gay porn but didn't wanna scare you"
+1

I don't even remember gay sex scenes. There was flogging and there was Amadeo watching his master bone a female prostitute. Was there more to it?

I seem to recall there was some mutual masturbation (or at least, him being masturbated by his master, because vampires can't get it up or something), but I read these back in high school.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
it was heavily implied that Marius pleasured Amadeo and they shared a bed/took "baths" together

vampires don't have sex but all their senses are so heightened everything feels orgasmic
Amadeo, being human, still gets to enjoy one-sided sexytimes with Marius, if that makes sense?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
oh and Amadeo visits a gay whorehouse at some point, IIRC

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember it being just implied-- it's typical Anne Rice purple prose bullshit but Marius definitely "shot Amadeo's arrow off" in the bath right after they met.

...I read that book when I was like 13 and that scene has stuck with me for the last decade and a half ._.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Shot his arrow off.

I genuinely love it. Now I want to read those books. But then I am the sort of person who once made a list of all the euphemisms for sexual organs in Fanny Hill (there were dozens! they were fantastic!).

The more posts about Anne Rice I see, the more convinced I am that she is a very shitty author.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I think you're just interrogating the text from the wrong angle.

Oh, no, I just wrote a really OT comment. Well, it pertained to the comments above rather than to the secret itself. I should've specified, of course.

or was your reply really an anal sex pun?

I can no longer tell

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

Anne Rice once famously accused people who criticise her books on amazon as interpreting the text from the wrong perspective.

How did you figure it could be an anal sex pun? /curious

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
*interrogating, of course, not interpreting

Ooh, right. I thought I saw the phrase somewhere :D

Anything can be an anal sex pun if you pick the right person to be the butt of the joke.

It was an Anne Rice pun.

You should read the Sleeping Beauty trilogy - it's about on par with fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The royal BDSM fantasy AU kind of fic with no basis in reality. The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty's Punishment and Beauty's Release - they are also by Anne Rice under the pseudonym of A. N. Roquelaure.

Is it gay?

Re: You should read the Sleeping Beauty trilogy - it's about on par with fic.

na

Sometimes!

Re: You should read the Sleeping Beauty trilogy - it's about on par with fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Large parts of it, yes, especially the last two books.

Re: You should read the Sleeping Beauty trilogy - it's about on par with fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here, read enough of it to establish that it wasn't doing anything for me on any level.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I love when this stuff happens.
The disappointment could be because she expected you not to have a single encounter with the topic of sexuality so it would be something completely new and different.
