You know there are reasons why Japanese mangaka wouldn't want their work translated in the West, right? Liiiike... for instaaaance... the huge culture of anime and manga piracy in Western fandom!!!

Like all the morons stealing fanart from Pixiv and reposting it on Tumblr. Just put a link to the artist's Pixiv account, it's not that difficult. Or even better, just put the link and don't upload the art.

OP said "keep up scanlations against the author's wishes who only want to keep their series for Japanese audiences". That doesn't have anything to do with the anime or manga piracy.

The reason mangaka don't want to share their work with Western audiences is because they think they can get it for free.

Refusing to have it translated in the West does nothing but cut them short money, though, because people in the West who would buy it obviously have nothing to buy. The mangaka are choosing between having it spread exclusively through piracy, or having it be released, getting some amount of money, and then having it pirated on top of that. The first option makes no sense.

Because they don't buy it even when it's legally available in the West.

Well, that's blatantly untrue. Piracy happens, but hardly every anime fan steals anime/manga.

#NotAllAnime/MangaFans

But really while a fair amount don't, there's still a big issue of piracy, especially in the more hardcore (idk what would be a better term) parts of the fandom.

Well, manga obviously sells, otherwise the manga sections of bookstores wouldn't have rapidly expanded over the past decade.

If manga was as cheap as it is in Japan, things would be different. But it's not the case.

What are distribution costs?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Cost or expense incurred in moving goods from the point of production to the point of consumption. Also called distribution expense.

Manga really isn't that cheap in Japan.

Oh, I would call 460 yen for most mainstream manga cheap. Of course there are also some which are more expensive, but the majority of it is in the 300-600 yen range. That'd be 2-4€ in my country and considering that you cannot get manga nowadays for less than 7-10€, it is quite a difference.
