I hope the japanese stop selling doujinshi to the non-japanese entirely.

+1

Why is it so hard to accept that some shit is just not for you?

Lol the day this happens is the day I put every doujinshi I buy from Mandarake/K-BOOKS/Toranoana on the internet. Every. Single. One. It's not like those stores are going to deny customers based on race (that would be illegal) and it's not like the djka are going to stop selling through those stores. Heck, even if they did, I could just buy through their own sites as "(insert Japanese name here)". I don't scan/up shit. Out of respect. But if me being foreign is good enough for a racist asshat to assume that, well... yes, I will! Gladly!

In the DMC fandom one artist password-locked her blog with the express interest of keeping foreigners out, and the answer was a Japanese history question. Seriously? You don't think any non-Japanese people read Japanese and have studied Japanese history, bitch? ...I happily re-upped everything she posted there on all the Western fan forums I could find ;p

See, before this, at comic markets she'd limit "foreigners" to one copy of her work, because she assumed they were all resellers. (Aw shit, is someone making a profit off of someone else's IP worried about people making a profit off of your art? The gall!) So... me being white, I got one copy and couldn't get the one I wanted for my friend. But my Chinese-American buddy (AND ACTUAL RESELLER) got ten copies. To resell. Because ALL LOOK SAME, I guess.

Like, seriously, you have no idea how much racist shit non-Japanese fans already have to deal with in Japanese fandoms in Japan. And we're not all visibly "foreign" and many of us speak passably native Japanese. I've discussed this with many other angry foreign fans in Japan and what you suggest would be the first shots fired in a war that would lead to every fan item they ever made freely available on the internet the day they released it.

The white whine is strong with this one.

Here's the thing. If you sell things, you lose control of that item the moment the other person has paid for it and it is in their hands. You can't control what someone who purchases something does with it, nor should you be able to. Either you deal with that fact or you don't sell shit at all.

I do costume commissions occasionally for some extra money. If someone buys something from me and decides to alter it slightly in whatever way, I have no right to tell them they can't do that because the costume belongs to them now. I would have a right to complain if they were passing it off as their own work or using it to make a profit, but if they loan it to a friend for a con or a photoshoot or even decide to resell it eventually, that's their right.

It's the same with doujinshi. Scanning and translating it and charging money for the scans or translations would be wrong. But doing it for free? That's on the same level as loaning a costume to a friend. No harm, no foul.
