Really? I'm not part of this community but it seems like a valid criticism.

There is a lot of free content going round, from what I hear, and people on the internet do tend to get entitled after too many freebies.

I dont think so, because it seems like the OP is complaining about original manga IPs being scanlated and pirated against the authors' wishes, where as the September Scanlations kerfuffle is about doujinshi, the clusterfuck of Eastern-Western fandom relations and intrafandom piracy.

I have more sympathy for doujinshi authors being pirated than licensed manga authors TBH, because they 1. are making little if any money off their creations to begin with, 2. have far less legal recourse against people who repurpose their work without permission, and 3. FFS they're just in it for the love of fandom, and Western fandom has to take advantage of that and take a giant dump all over their wishes in the name of """""spreading the love~""""".

Fencer-x is such a spectacular tool, though, even in a sea of other tools.

I'm so confused at the vitriol directed at them (actually, no I'm not. tumblr user romakoto is a troll with an axe to grind and reblogged a months-old post that started this wank; SS has been upfront about their actions from day 1).

Like, other scanlation groups (manga AND doujinshi) do stuff like this all the time, make it harder for mangaka and doujin artists to find their stuff, and...no one gives a hoot?

But suddenly SS does this, SS whose representative has lots of lovers and haters, and they're on the chopping block?

The argument doesn't really hold for doujinshi, IMO, because there is no way for English-speaking fans to read it outside of scanlations. There will never be official English releases of doujinshi and often even just tracking down a copy of the original Japanese version can be hard enough. Besides, doujinshi isn't something that's done for profit anyway, so it's not as if they're harming sales or anything of that nature.

You know there are reasons why Japanese mangaka wouldn't want their work translated in the West, right? Liiiike... for instaaaance... the huge culture of anime and manga piracy in Western fandom!!!

It's not racism so much as a desire to get paid for their work by a distribution company before their work is translated into English. And in the eyes of actual, paying-for-the-works-they-publish distributing companies, what's free and all over the internet probably isn't worth paying for in the eyes of the average consumer, because why pay when you can get it for free?

oh my GOD. At first I thought this was an issue of Japan's rampant xenophobia, but what it boils down to really is some entitled Western anime fans deciding that they have the right to anything they want for free, and fuck the creator of the work if they don't like it.

I earn two dollars a day. One volume of manga in English costs 9 to 12 dollars plus $15 shipping. Yeah, I am very entitled about my piracy.

It's fun if you live in Western Europe or US. People mostly can afford manga/anime and it's available in English and licensed. The wages aren't outrageously low and good not so expensive. I'm still amazed that I can afford DVDs in UK - it doesn't cost an arm and a hand, wow!

But in my hometown EVERYTHING was pirated. EVERYTHING! Till a few years ago government companies ran on pirated software and PCs in store had illegal systems/programs installed. Sure, it's not right and theft is theft but who says you have to be the good guy.

I never was. Pssst, I recorded music on tapes from TV :D . AND RADIO. My uncle had all the cartoons recorded on VCR. Ah, fun.

Piracy happens whether anime/manga or anything else. Some fans pay for everything, some fans pay for some things, some fans pay for nothing. This is not something unique to anime/manga fandoms.

If you know where to get free or cheap anime/manga, I'm sure there are plenty of people on f!s who would find that interesting and try it out in good faith. Some of them might even prefer it to pirating.

However, most of the industries being torn up by the piracy debate do a piss-poor job paying their creators. I've paid full price in the US for manga. I'd really like to know how much of that money goes to the artist. What I'd really like to be able to do is wire money from my bank account to theirs when I read and love a scanlation.

I get tired of watching Western anime/manga fandom tear itself up over how it's "ruining everything." Media made in another country should be able to sink or swim based on national sales. If it's orders of magnitude more profitable overseas, that should be an added bonus. If it doesn't export, or the exports aren't profitable, that should be very secondary to how the story did in Japan. Seriously. Anime and manga went through this stupid fad where it was bought and licensed by a whole slew of companies that made all sorts of blunders because they just assumed it was The Next Big Thing and would sell itself. They often didn't pay for good translations, adequate dubs, or even market what they were offering (generally at very high-end prices). And when the bubble burst and most of them went belly-up, the fandom self-flagellated over piracy.

Also, if you write a story, and people like it, they're going to translate it into other languages, possibly with your approval but more likely not. If they're selling their translations (as has happened with plagiarized, commercial works in India) I have sympathy for wanting it to stop. For something that's getting passed around completely free, though, not so much. And the likelihood that someone unscrupulous can poach your story for money and not get caught doing that goes way up if there are no free translations.
