The thing is, no one owes you entertainment. It's not like it being morally acceptable to steal bread because you're too poor to buy it because you won't die if you don't have something to watch one evening. You're not actually entitled to pirating.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Piracy is not stealing. It's sharing. No unsold copies harmed. Damn, this discussion is so old.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
lol you're deluding yourself if you don't think piracy has a serious impact on the anime and manga industry outside japan

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
you either give people all over the world get immediate access to your product for a reasonable price, or it will be pirated.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, look at what Crunchyroll does and look at how prevalent anime piracy still is.

from google's dictionary:

piracy - the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea; a practice similar to piracy but in other contexts, especially hijacking; the unauthorized use or reproduction of another's work.

theft - the action or crime of stealing.

stealing - take (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it; move somewhere quietly or surreptitiously.

from dictionary.law.com:

theft - n. the generic term for all crimes in which a person intentionally and fraudulently takes personal property of another without permission or consent and with the intent to convert it to the taker's use (including potential sale).

Where, exactly, in those definitions is the word "sharing"? "stealing" and "taking of another's property without permission" show up pretty often. And IP property, whether physical or not, IS property. Or should I look that up for you too?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Piracy: non-consensual sharing!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Once again, that's stealing. Unless you'd enjoy non-consensually sharing the contents of your bank account with strangers on the internet?

You seem to be missing an important part of the definition of "stealing," which is the word "take." You cannot take something without removing it from where it was, which is why piracy is it's own term and there are so many videos that try to equate piracy with stealing. Definition-wise, they are not the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
LIBRARIES.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'M GOING TO LOL IF YOU'RE A MEMER.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
ha, yeah. someone's idea of a library is, like, a magical place where all new books appear. in real life here it's a dusty shit poor place that's literally falling apart, with books from the 1980s, where no one's even even heard the word 'manga'. yeah, and no books in original English at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree. My small-town library was underfunded even before piracy became a thing, so I just didn't read as a kid. It's as bad today, so I give my nieces and little brothers pirated books to read because guess what? otherwise they won't read either!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
True, though lived next to some good libraries. My current one is stocked with ... Doctor Who and Torchwood books. They have a whole bookcase of them. Others are the least popular novels you can find (the newest one was from 2001), but well - some are awesome.

Agreed. I'm not necessarily "anti-piracy" but it's annoying when people try to justify it with "it's not stealing" or "I'm entitled to this because I'm poor."

Pirate if you want, but why not just be honest with yourself about it?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
da

This.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not stealing.

Here, have a song. Maybe you'll be able to understand it with a song

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It is stealing. If I sneak into a movie theater without paying for a ticket, I'm not "stealing". Are you saying that's okay? Should I do that, guilt free?

I don't have a crusade against piracy. But all this bullshit justification to act like you're entitled to free entertainment, smh.

You must be such a wonderful human being if you honestly believe that poor people don't deserve entertainment only because they can't afford it.

We're not talking here about people who can but don't want to pay. Have some empathy.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You literally just have to wait a week.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
SA

Ignore this, I thought you were replying to something else.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't, though. There are really other ways to entertain yourself that don't involve piracy. These people obviously have access to the internet which has literally endless amounts of free games and webcomics and webtoons and webseries, not to mention scads of legal, out-of-copyright copies of books. And, you know, all of the non-media entertainment that exists in the real world. It's a total bullshit argument to act like if poor people couldn't pirate then they would be staring at a wall until bedtime.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)

As a ridiculously poor person at this moment in time, yes, I do honestly believe that poor people aren't entitled to entertainment only because they can't afford it.

And yes, I have plenty of empathy since I'm in that position right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why don't you and everybody else that can't afford all our entitled entertainment go and kill yourselves since you apparently can't enjoy yourselves without thieving Welfare Sluts and Fedora Moochers.
