Agreed. I'm not necessarily "anti-piracy" but it's annoying when people try to justify it with "it's not stealing" or "I'm entitled to this because I'm poor."

Pirate if you want, but why not just be honest with yourself about it?

da

This.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not stealing.

Here, have a song. Maybe you'll be able to understand it with a song

It is stealing. If I sneak into a movie theater without paying for a ticket, I'm not "stealing". Are you saying that's okay? Should I do that, guilt free?

I don't have a crusade against piracy. But all this bullshit justification to act like you're entitled to free entertainment, smh.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what stealing is:

steal
[steel]

verb (used with object), stole, stolen, stealing.
1.
to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right, especially secretly or by force:

Piracy or sneaking into a movie theater are wrong, but they aren't stealing. You can't use 'steal' as an all-purpose word .

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But sneaking into a movie theater is not stealing, wtf are you talking about.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

If the theatre's so packed that you're taking someone's seat, it'd be wrong. Otherwise, I honestly don't see it as a very big deal.

What a lot of anti-pirating people don't get is that most of the time, it's not pirate vs. pay, it's pirate vs. nothing. Almost no one who pirates will suddenly decide to pay for something if pirating isn't possible for them, they'll just go without. That's why I don't see it as a big deal.

What you seem to get is that the anti-piracy people aren't overly concerned with whether you or anyone else has free entertainment. They worked to produce that thing and they want to be paid for their work. Or do you not expect to be paid for your work?

SA

*What you seem NOT to get...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
You make it sound like everyone in this thread who's against piracy is in the entertainment industry.

Or maybe it's all you and you're working there?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a proponent of people getting paid for their work. If that offends you, perhaps you should try living without money.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone gets paid for every single thing they work on. I'm an engineer, and although my plans are my intellectual property and every design is mine, literally anyone can have a copy made if they contact the district office and get the digital file. We make not a single dime off of individual copies or the digital files, and most people who make entertainment are also not paid that way. Pirating a movie does not generally prevent the actors, directors, writers, or other active departments from getting paid. Except in rare cases, they've already been paid: it's just profit for the studio at that point.

Thank you for this wonderful parallel that actually explains it. I'm a software developer - I get paid at the end of the month, but I sure as heck don't own the IP I'm creating. That ... really doesn't bug me.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
That's funny because I do work in the entertainment industry and yes it does offend me when you deliberately sound like you're speaking for me and others :)
