I don't blame you. I don't know whether this is more prevalent on FF.net (where I have never posted fic) but friends have mentioned reviews like that, especially the 'entitled' ones which are basically one long whine of: 'But you're not writing what I want. I would like it if you wrote what I want.'

I have always said that I would respond by telling the reviewer they were most welcome to go and write their own version of the story. Then they could have it exactly as they want it. And I would mean it. They could absolutely do that with my goodwill.

No, this shit is on ao3,too. Some asshole keeps commenting on my old Teen Wolf fics complaining that there isn't enough Sterek. Like, when it isn't even a Sterek fic. Like, even when it takes place before either of them were born.

Seriously, she needs to shut the fuck up. I stopped writing in that fandom because she was so fucking annoying.

How in god's name is there insuffecient Sterek in the word? Like, 90% of Teen Wolf fic is Sterek!

Seems strange. So you're only open to reviews you like? I don't judge, but reallly? Readers can enjoy a story without 'getting' the author's point.

I think the OP is referring to "reviews" like:

Good story, but WHY OH WHY DID YOU PUT A WITH B? DON'T YOU KNOW B/C IS CANON?! HOW DARE YOU PAIR A AND B!?!111!!!!

I leave 'em up, but I don't blame OP for deleting them.

Gosh, I wish someone would write such a review about one of my fics! It would definitely get a place of honor in my heart.

OP isn't talking about reviews that are critical about how they wrote their story. OP is talking about reviews that whine about which story they chose to write in the first place. "You should've had A get together with C, B is awful!" or "Why don't you write a D/E story? That would be much hotter."

Some reviewers fail to realize that, unless they are participating in a fic exchange, a kinkmeme, or a fandom charity auction, they don't get to demand that authors write stories tailored to their shipping/kink/character preferences, and bash them for writing other stories instead.

I never understand why people who leave comments on fics telling you that you are doing it wrong, they should write their own stories then.

Sometimes they do. And, like, 99% of the time it sucks ass. One of my least favorite commenters, who did that shit all the time, finally started writing her preferences and the dozen or so she shat out got maybe a combined thousand hits with few kudos. My glee could not be contained. Sometimes people don't write shit because it's awful and should just stay in your wank fantasies. Most of us have the brain capacity to understand that. Some people don't, I guess.

How is this a secret? I thought most people deleted reviews that missed the point or outright flamed?

I recently had a series of reviews on a multi-chapter fic that complained about my characterization of someone in a fic clearly tagged for alternate character interpretation. I was only annoyed when I realized some of the person's complaints were that I was not using the reviewer's preferred *fanon*, not *canon*. I left the comments up and replied fairly politely that not all fics worked for all readers...but I certainly don't feel responsible to incorporate non-canon elements that don't interest me when I can just male up my own!

I feel guilty about deleting reviews, but a while back I got an anon review on ff.net that bothered me enough I took it down. The story was an alt-universe piece of harmless redemption fluff, and this anon reviewer asked me whether anyone was ever going to draw parallels between my characters (harmless redemptive) actions and a really horrible true-life crime involving harm to children.

I actually felt dirty and sick at the idea of my clearly-well-intentioned piece of silliness being connected in any way with something so vile, so eventually I deleted the review. I have no idea what the reviewer was thinking-- the tone of the review was "obviously these two things are alike," not even overtly nasty. I assure everyone, THEY WERE NOT! One thing I never do in stories is harm kids, and (in-story, and probably in canon) the character was very obviously not a threat to anyone, let alone children. Yuck.

I thought you meant you deleted the fanfic was all "well that's extreme". :P
