Wow. You know what? I totally agree. He really looks much, much better in the picture on the left.

But I think it might be about the character as well as about the costume and stuff. He's trying to play Sherlock as very intense and weird. Which is fine from an acting perspective but it doesn't make him look quite as handsome. I mean look at his scowling-ass expression there on the right.

Am I the only one who sees next to no difference between the two? Cumberbatch's appearance undergoes no magical change when he is playing Sherlock. I don't think they even put all that much effort into making him look different from his RL self.

Then again, it might be my peculiar brand of face blindness. Anyone?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a couple/three years between the two photos. He's younger in the Marple shot and that might be his natural hair color. He looks fine in both.

He looks slightly better in the left one, mostly because dark hair just does not suit him, but there's not a huge difference, facially.

I'm not faceblind at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well his face hasn't changed. But the hair can make a lot of difference to some people. Blonde is more his colour, and the shortness of it makes him look less emaciated, if that makes sense. It's like, if he has a great deal of dark hair, the rest of his face seems smaller and less healthy, also he seems much paler, in what looks like a sickly sort of way to me.
Not that the difference is very great, but it is there.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The picture in the secret doesn't show it much, but as I recall the show lights his face in a particular way to bring out his cheekbones and nose, make his skin look paler, draw attention to his eyes, and that sort of thing. Also, in the first season, BC lost a lot of weight during filming, didn't he?

I slipped away from the fandom so this is based on half-remembered commentary. I didn't see the third season - is the difference less dramatic now?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the opposite. I only find him attractive as Sherlock. I think it's the dark hair.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, different strokes for different folks and all. I prefer dark hair in general myself.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Dark curly hair drastically improves his appearance, imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I had actually kind of forgotten, because I didn't find him attractive at all in STID. But then season 3 of Sherlock just recently hit Netflix and after watching I'm going "oh yeah, now I remember why I thought he was attractive."

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-06-29 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
same. And the coat, makeup, operator work. Though he's especially handsome as a Smoug.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here! When he's playing Sherlock, I find him magnetic and even kind of attractive in a strange way, mostly due to his persona (I've loved book!Sherlock for over two decades, he used to be my imaginary boyfriend when I was 12 LOLZ) but also because of the contrast between his dark hair and nice pale skin (maaaan, I was disappointed his hair wasn't as dark in later seasons as it was in season 1, the haircolor's one of my fave things about him and such a silly small thing to be bummed about), his VOICE, eyes and hands, the way he walks, the coat flapping behind him, the way he narrows his eyes when he's thinking, etc. It's basically the character that does it for me. The Sherlock character hits a lot of my "kinks".

But Ben just as himself? Not really, no, and that's ok. He's a lovely and adorkable person but, appearance wise, once the Sherlock persona is stripped off him, a lot of the allure is gone.

It doesn't bother me and I still follow his career, I simply fantasize about BBC Sherlock, not Ben, and that's that. Same with actors I find very attractive; it's just more fun and stress free fantasizing about the characters they play!

This. (Though this particular non-Sherlock pic sort of reminds me of Ben Browder which is not entirely unpleasant.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
+1 usually he just looks weird, in Sherlock it's less weird and more otherwordly. Like he's still creepy but good-creepy. It's probably the added contrast of the hair.

Another secret about Benedict's face...yay.

*sigh* Yea, IA people should be less dickish when talking about looks (though everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's the way some people state those opinions that bothers me).

And for the record I think he looks fine in either picture, and his Sherlock outfit really does it for me (DAT COAT), but...we've had this conversation like a thousand times...why are we still talking about his face?

Why?

Someone at least go make a secret about his collarbone or arms or something, shake things up a bit.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-29 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
...we could talk about Martin's face instead? I'm not sure why we don't, actually--I find him pretty fugly, and I really want to punch him any time he says something. Why BC tends to be the one people complain about, I have no idea.

I've become resigned to the fact that discussing Cumberbatch's appearance is just something we need to do on a regular basis in order to get it out of our system. Think of it as an FS chore - it's like cleaning the gutters, only more wanky and no one needs to get a ladder.

See the Sherlock color is too dark but light hair isn't that flattering either. He looks best in a medium brown/dark auburn, like in Third Star or August: Osage County.

He also looks so much better with his natural hair colour, it's painful.

I think that the hair and costume in Sherlock serve to channel attention to his eyes (which aren't very ... authoratative otherwise), and serve to underscore his hyper-perceptiveness.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
All I find really annoying and stupid is the "fights" that go with the ones who think he's ugly and the ones who thinks he's God on earth. Why does it matter if someone thinks he's attractive or not? It's a matter of preference and not all people like same things. For example I don't think he's that goodlooking but I'm not gonna go everywhere screaming that he's "ugly" but I'm also sick and tired of people shocked and defending his looks when attraction isn't something you change your mind on.

Why not everyone just accept the fact that people are attracted to different things at all times, believe it or not, and let it go.

FFS enough with these secrets!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks like a young Patrick Swayze in the left photo.

*quietly goes away now*

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe he's just aging poorly but he looks nice on the left. I don't think he's ugly, per se, but I think there are many more attractive men in the world. Benedict is a damn good actor, however.

That said, my taste in men rotates around excessive amounts of muscle and body hair.

mmmm... HAIR.
