All I know is that Tolkien didn't decide to cliffhang any of his books by covering a dragon in molten gold and then having it fly off while telling itself in the most melodramatic fashion possible, "I am FIRE! I AM...DEATH!"

So the books win.

I was mildly embarrassed by it, tbh. Partly because I knew how much fan squee there'd be over it.

I think book!Smaug is a bit of a drama queen who loves the sound of his own voice, but the Temple of Doom shenanigans with the molten gold was ridiculous.
