I think they're having trouble with that storyline, and they know it, which s why they've padded it up with some stuff.

But, I do actually think it's interesting and crucial. If she has any hope of even wanting to sit on the iron throne, she needs to prove she can actually rule.

I see it as one of those moments that's important for character development, but not necessarily interesting to watch. It feels like it's happening so Dany will have something to do before the obvious goal of attempting to claim the Iron Throne.

I agree. I think there's an unfortunate undercurrent of Dany "practicing" on "less civilized" people so she can actually know what the hell she's doing when she gets to the, er, more important Westeros (see, unfortunate subtext), but she's clearly a bit of a mess. She needs to figure out what sort of queen she wants to be and how to do that.

I never thought of it that way, but you know, I think you're right and maybe that explains why I dislike that part of the series. :(

You're the one labelling them as less civilized. The books don't treat them that way. The books and show treat them as people--brown people, perhaps, some were slaves, some are shepherds, some are former slave owners. If you see those kinds of people as lesser in any way, that's your deal. It's not coming from the story.
