A sock a footglove?

In the wild wild world that is the German language, sure! Hand (hand) + Schuh (shoe) = Handschuh (glove)

Genius!

They must get very confused when they hear English speakers talking about all the stuff they keep in their handbags.

Oh yes. We have lots of wonderful words that are simply stuck-together desciptions for what a thing does. Like Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher.

Google Translate gave me "eggshell breaking points polluter". I'm giggling and trying to figure out what it is. Is it a garbage disposal?

Pretty accurate save for the "polluter" part. That would be more like.. causer? Basically, it's a weird gadget where you put an egg under it and drop a little weight on it and it causes the eggshell to crack so you can peel it more easily. The English term seems to be punch-bell egg cracker. It has an easier name - Eierköpfer - but I have actually seen the long one on signs in a store - not a great idea, it sounds really stupid and it was so long it stretched over three lines.

Same in Dutch: handschoen.
