The wizarding world seemed pretty sadistic what with turning siblings against each other and the mind games they pull around the whole competition and some of the penalties for various transgressions. I remember being struck about how cavalier they were when saying that you had to be a wizard to date a werewolf because your werewolf partner would inevitably attack you at some point. But don't get me started about Mason and Alex. The writers seemed to be simultaneously aware of how violent and creepy Mason's behavior was while making their relationship seem goofy and cute.

All that being said, one of the things I liked about the show was its gonzo silliness. But I agree that the two aspects of the show didn't always mesh well, and there was lots of potential for the show to go in a totally different direction. I'm not sure I'd enjoy the grim dark version of the show as much, but I'd read the heck out of the fanfiction (ok, to be honest, these days I'd pretty much read the heck out of any semi-competently written fanfic for this series. Pickings are slim).
