You know what still bothers me? What happens if after the Wizarding Competition, one of the parents remarries and has another kid? Would they have to go through this whole process again?

YOU DIDN'T THINK THIS THROUGH, DISNEY.

Also, I really wish they had stuck to their original plan of Justin and Alex being best friends instead of siblings. Would have worked a lot better.

It also would have made some of their scenes less creepy...

Certainly it would have made things less incest-y.

ikr? after the show ended, Gomez admitted that she used to have a crush on Justin's actor and you can really tell that it bled into the show

I don't. I love epic sibling relationships like that. And the incest-y-ness just made it even darker and more epic and twisted than it already was.

I agree. They already had a lot of plot lines that were pretty fucked up (a minor character being turned into a statue and then getting shattered, which was effectively murder, comes to mind) and it's too bad they couldn't really be explored more in depth and had to play out on such a sanitized network

Didn't it, though?

I mean, a lot of the show was Alex messing with (the balance of) things, or getting into trouble (going to extremes).

Besides, there were some messed up implications in that show and The Movie was pretty dark.

True, but the *complete* implications of "the end will no doubt justify the means" and "well, you might find out it will go to your head" and "when you can get all you wanted in your wildest dreams" can go to some pretty twisted places...

I don't think the theme song really gave any kind of image that the show would do more than what it did. But I was disappointed with the show and eventually stopped watching sometime in season 3. I really liked the earlier episodes better. They weren't more serious or anything, but at least I found them fun. Later on the show didn't feel fun and still didn't have a decent plot so there was nothing worth watching imo.

When it ended I did watch the series finale just to see how it all turned out, and I hated that ending too.

The wizarding world seemed pretty sadistic what with turning siblings against each other and the mind games they pull around the whole competition and some of the penalties for various transgressions. I remember being struck about how cavalier they were when saying that you had to be a wizard to date a werewolf because your werewolf partner would inevitably attack you at some point. But don't get me started about Mason and Alex. The writers seemed to be simultaneously aware of how violent and creepy Mason's behavior was while making their relationship seem goofy and cute.

All that being said, one of the things I liked about the show was its gonzo silliness. But I agree that the two aspects of the show didn't always mesh well, and there was lots of potential for the show to go in a totally different direction. I'm not sure I'd enjoy the grim dark version of the show as much, but I'd read the heck out of the fanfiction (ok, to be honest, these days I'd pretty much read the heck out of any semi-competently written fanfic for this series. Pickings are slim).

I think Disney tried to make it really dark sometimes, and succeeded. I reference the storyline where Alex meets a gal who ran away from the Wizarding tournament. She's leading her own rebellion to destroy the rules, and make sure no child ever loses their wizarding power. Her brother, who won the tournament, wants his rightful powers.

And what ends up happening? Oh nothing, except she gets frozen and then smashed into hundreds of pieces, and everyone pretty much shrugs it off. Like... were they raised with the lesson of 'Wizarding kids die... a LOT. Don't let it bug you too much.'

WTF?!
