I don't read much PacRim fic, but just... the movie. Those fucking ACCENTS. They were absolutely horrible!

(And no, no fucking Australian would call his kid 'Chuck'! Fuck, if you want to shorten Charles, at least go for Chas/Chaz or something!)

The accents were horrible. American and British friends kept going to me 'is that what you sound like then?' and I was like 'no, that's what you guys think we sound like' -_-

On the Chuck thing though: I've known two Charles in my life, and one was a Chuck (the other was Charles or Charlie). I'm never met a Chas, is it common?

I'd have called 'em "chazzwazzers!"

My own headcanon just to make sense of the whole "Chuck" thing (because, seriously, so not Australian) is that Herc always called Chuck "Charlie" and so Chuck demanded to be called Chuck when their relationship deteriorated, just to be contrary.

Actually, that could make sense. I might adopt that as my headcanon, sure.

Omg this. Their attempts at the Australian accent made my ears bleed (more than normal Aussie accents do :P), it was so difficult to listen to them. They veered all over the place as well, the headcanon I came up with to retain my sanity is that they're South Africans who moved to Australia at some point in time, because lord. I was glad one of them was killed so it was one less of them I had to put up with lol.

Maybe they moved to the states or something for a while, perhaps when Chuck was a child (inland for safety).

Only problem is that that would require actually crossing the Pacific - it'd be much safer to go to inland Australia, if not out to the west coast and then across the Indian Ocean from there. If they wanted to get to the States without crossing the Pacific, they'd have to cross the length of Australia, then the Indian Ocean and Asia and Europe, then the Atlantic, and get to the US via the east coast.

If you're saying that as a reason for the awkward accents, then it doesn't work. Australian accents don't have the sort of variation that American and British accents do.

I do believe there's variation, but either I've never heard it, or it so subtle it passes me by. I do know country accents tend to be slower and more drawled than city accents, as my Mum (a country-born-and-raised person) had elocution lessons in college as part of her teacher training. She says one of the big things she had to learn was to speed up her pace of talking. (I, on the other hand, am very much a city kid.)

I suggested it mostly as where he might have acquired the uncommon nickname "Chuck." I don't actually believe it to be true, I was just throwing it out there.

Yeah, that's possible, though I don't know how probable.

I'd say "Charlie" would pass without too much comment, though I also agree "Chas/Chaz" might happen too.

I also think the name "Herc" was terrible. Do you think and Aussie would name their kid Herc? I don't. I wish he was named Barry.

Idris Elba's name was Stacker Penticost. We may be overthinking this tbh.

You're right, though I still wish for a revival of Barry used for Aussie characters. It's a good, classic Australian name.
