I told him "torch" means "stick on fucking fire" -- not "tube with batteries and a light on the end," and that I'll take my flashlight, and he can shove his torch in his dark places.

Not so much the way we talk, but just general descriptions of places, how stuff works, how people interact.
I think not so long ago I read something that had a tight border patrol between two EU countries and I'm thinking: a) that's not right and b) that's researchable, surely. But then, it IS fanfic, and I do have slightly different expectations than from a novel.
But then I've seen some canon that gets it somewhat wrong, too.
I know it's not quite what you mean, but yeah...

I wanted to then say, "but these characters aren't." I made myself let it go so I didn't sound like even more of an asshole.

(And no, no fucking Australian would call his kid 'Chuck'! Fuck, if you want to shorten Charles, at least go for Chas/Chaz or something!)

Sometimes it bothers me, but if it's just a few words I don't usually care.
(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)Question for the OP?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:11 am (UTC)(link)Speaking as someone who is neither from the US nor from the UK and for whom English is a second language anyway but who somehow managed to understand their point of view when others mangled their language, customs and slang, your secret makes you sound like a narrow-minded person with no respect for other cultures than your own. Do you realize that?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)I usually just think it's adorable if either British or Americans try to write Australians... But then again I haven't come across this 'crisps' issue. Everything is goddamn chips goddammit, you'd best not be talking about crisps or fries here son. We believe in language efficiency. Wedges are a thing though, that's okay. Also, tater tots = potato jems.
Please hit me up if you want to know anymore potato-related Australian terms, I'm here all night.

I've read a few PacRim fics that I thought sounded legit but there have also been some that really gave me the giggles.

I have to wonder just a little if Guillermo del Toro thought Rob Kazinsky's exposure to New Zealand accents before he left The Hobbit might have informed him on accent. Kiwi accent is fairly similar to ours.
But really, their accents were... well I won't say they were horrible, it's not like they were trying to do a Steve Irwin impression, but they were still sub par.
I have said it before and I will say it again, I wish they had found some less than well-known Aussie actors to play these roles.
