I got into an argument with a very arrogant, know-it-all Brit because he thought "flashlight" was stupid. "It's a torch, what else would you call it? Why do Americans have to dumb everything down? Would you call a speaker a soundout? A sock a footglove?" (of course he completely ignores the British tendency to infantilize words, like "telly")

I told him "torch" means "stick on fucking fire" -- not "tube with batteries and a light on the end," and that I'll take my flashlight, and he can shove his torch in his dark places.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
lol they call elevators "lifts" and subways "tubes", how can he criticize us for calling something a "flashlight"?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What an asshole. Maybe they should stop putting an 'f' in when they say lieutenant.

A sock a footglove?

In the wild wild world that is the German language, sure! Hand (hand) + Schuh (shoe) = Handschuh (glove)

Genius!

I honestly get that about Europe portrayed in some fics.

Not so much the way we talk, but just general descriptions of places, how stuff works, how people interact.

I think not so long ago I read something that had a tight border patrol between two EU countries and I'm thinking: a) that's not right and b) that's researchable, surely. But then, it IS fanfic, and I do have slightly different expectations than from a novel.

But then I've seen some canon that gets it somewhat wrong, too.

I know it's not quite what you mean, but yeah...

While the wrong word thing does get on my nerves, it's especially jarring to me in dialogue. I actually told an author I would have enjoyed a fic more if these American characters didn't sound British. Her response? "I am British, so..."

I wanted to then say, "but these characters aren't." I made myself let it go so I didn't sound like even more of an asshole.

I don't read much PacRim fic, but just... the movie. Those fucking ACCENTS. They were absolutely horrible!

(And no, no fucking Australian would call his kid 'Chuck'! Fuck, if you want to shorten Charles, at least go for Chas/Chaz or something!)

Sometimes it bothers me, but if it's just a few words I don't usually care.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But damn, if it's a baby fic, wow, do we have different names for things. And that's not even counting the myriad of names that people have for pacifiers - I think that one differs by family.

Question for the OP?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
So does this mean that now you finally get why UK and US people can get irritated about such things, or is your secret about how it only matters if it's your own country's language and customs that get misrepresented in movies and fanfics?

Speaking as someone who is neither from the US nor from the UK and for whom English is a second language anyway but who somehow managed to understand their point of view when others mangled their language, customs and slang, your secret makes you sound like a narrow-minded person with no respect for other cultures than your own. Do you realize that?

I'm not surprised that you're not bothered by the American/British English conflict since you're Australian. I'm only bothered by it because I'm American, and I think that's mostly the case; if it doesn't involve your language, you don't really care.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
This is the movie that had a massive wall going down the middle of Darling Harbour.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
As an Australian, I do get a bit bothered when fanfic authors make British characters say very American things, like 'mom', or talk abut freshmen and sophomores and in high school and fraternities in university. Like, what is going on.

I usually just think it's adorable if either British or Americans try to write Australians... But then again I haven't come across this 'crisps' issue. Everything is goddamn chips goddammit, you'd best not be talking about crisps or fries here son. We believe in language efficiency. Wedges are a thing though, that's okay. Also, tater tots = potato jems.

Please hit me up if you want to know anymore potato-related Australian terms, I'm here all night.

I think most of the world is also at a disadvantage, since if you want to hear American or British people speaking, it's pretty easy to find a lot of media from those countries. Australia has a lot less stuff out there for people to listen to.

I've read a few PacRim fics that I thought sounded legit but there have also been some that really gave me the giggles.

Holy Eru yes! This is what happens when you hire a Brit and a Yank to try play Aussies!

I have to wonder just a little if Guillermo del Toro thought Rob Kazinsky's exposure to New Zealand accents before he left The Hobbit might have informed him on accent. Kiwi accent is fairly similar to ours.

But really, their accents were... well I won't say they were horrible, it's not like they were trying to do a Steve Irwin impression, but they were still sub par.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I wish they had found some less than well-known Aussie actors to play these roles.
