While the wrong word thing does get on my nerves, it's especially jarring to me in dialogue. I actually told an author I would have enjoyed a fic more if these American characters didn't sound British. Her response? "I am British, so..."

I wanted to then say, "but these characters aren't." I made myself let it go so I didn't sound like even more of an asshole.

I'm a member of kneejerkers anonymous, so I probably would've said it.

I find that especially jarring.

I would've backed you up if you'd said it. Especially if this writer is the type of person to throw a fit if Harry Potter sounds too American.

It would have been perfectly legit crit, nothing assholish about it.

It's perfectly valid criticism. I agree, it's even worse when it's dialogue. I can just about take it in narrative, especially if who the POV character is a bit wonky to start with.

I can understand that writers just want to have fun, but they've got to also understand how jarring it is to readers. It can spoil enjoyment of an otherwise excellent fic.

The OP put it exactly: it's not jarring when it's not your own country/culture someone got wrong. Then you're thinking - what's the big deal? As soon as it's your own country/culture that the writer makes basic, easily googleable errors with, then it's incredibly distracting.

Basically E. L. James and her stupid main character that was supposed to be "All-American," but was always drinking tea and using Britishisms throughout. And then there was just novel text in general.
