Yeah, but, Thorin wasn't the point of the book, he was a plot vehicle. Bilbo is the heart of the book.

I mean, it's great that you enjoy the character more (book Thorin got really grating after a while, so grim and dour), but he's not the one carrying the story.

Book!Thorin is hilarious though. Like "don't you go calling my home a nasty, damp hole! You wait until it's decorated!".

Also, that pompous speech at Bag End! "This was Thorin's style. He was an important dwarf. If he had been allowed, he probably would have gone on like this until he was out of breath, without telling anyone there anything that was not known already."

I agree, but just because one character is carrying the story and is the emotional heart of the book doesn't mean that nobody else gets any emotional development.

The problem with the books is that almost no one did get emotional development. I think a lot of people hang onto that fact way too hard and use it as an excuse to say people should not be fans of those characters (especially Thorin in this thread) at all.

PJ simply does not get the fact that the hobbits are the point and WHY they are the point and never has, even in RoTK. I don't hate the movies at all but he's coming at it from a different angle.
