re: Lisa and Dean, the problem is less that she's a consolation prize and more that she's a symbol, not a character. She's kind of a gesture towards the life that Dean could have and the kind of person he'd be with if he could have a normal life, but they don't develop her beyond that. Her character is that she's good and empathetic and caring, but none of that issues into any real actions she takes or anything, because those just aren't the plots she's in.

TBH, a lot of the time, I'd be more interested in someone using an OC if they wanted to tell that kind of story, rather than Lisa, because at least they can come up with an interesting OC from scratch.

ayrt; Yes, that's it exactly. In her first episode she was interesting and if they'd built on the potential there she'd have been a fantastic match for Dean, but she got boxed into 'Dean's perfect Apple-Pie life' and suffered for it.

Jensen Ackles said at a recent con that Lisa and Ben were basically there to show that Dean just *could not * have that life. He tried, for a year, to be a normal guy and he just couldn't sustain it. He could barely even *do* it, paranoid and still drinking every night even when he was there for a year.

He said he loved her, but Dean can basically never be that guy.

That's interesting but I'm not sure the show actually can sustain that reading.

Seems like it already did to me. I don't believe that Dean will ever have another 'love' in his life, and i firmly believe the show will end with them both peacefully dead, having saved the world a last time and finally able to just let go.

My own opinions, of course.

I mean, the reading that the Lisa stuff shows that Dean was fundamentally incapable of being that guy or having that life is unsustainable (IMO). I don't think it would be impossible for him. Difficult, but not impossible. I don't think the show depicts it as being impossible. It's more that he gets pulled out of that life externally.

Anyway it's all good no big deal really.
