Re: Pairings you don't get

Grimmjow/Ichigo. I've tried and failed multiple times to understand how this became the main slash ship. I will never understand this one.

Darcy/Bucky. I saw that tag on a fic and could only think ...seriously?

Harry/Ginny. The pairing seemed way to forced and contrived in canon for me to buy it for a second, plus I was really put-off by the implication that Harry/Ginny is a James/Lily karmic do-over. I suppose I can see shipping it in the same way people ship Harry/Luna or Harry/Cho (seeing the potential and falling in love with the pairing) but I don't understand loving that awkward mess that was in canon.

Sasuke/Sakura. Sasuke was my favorite character for a long time, but he became too much of a jerk for me to like, let alone ship with anyone, and I've wanted Sakura to grow beyond her crush and into a badass powerful kunoichi from the beginning, but she just keeps getting sidelined to narrating what's going on in fights. I WANT to like the ship, but I just think Sakura deserves better.

Steve/Tony. I don't know about the comics, but they had next to no chemistry together in The Avengers to me.

Dean/Lisa. I liked Lisa, but I always felt like the writers just put here there to be Deans consolation prize so despite everything they did to establish her as a cool character too many big things were glossed over to smosh her back into the love interest mold. They hadn't seen each other for years after one weekend together, then he left for several more years after a couple days. I couldn't believe she just accepted a random love confession on her doorstep and let him into her life like that.

Itachi/Kisame. They tolerated each other enough to work together, but they never felt like they had any chemistry or even anything remotely in common.

I don't ship it, but Grimmjow/Ichigo has a lot of animosity in it and fandom loves that shit.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt; I'd understand an animosity ship, I've shipped pairings like that before, but this is incredibly one sided. Grimmjow was always super focused on Ichigo, but Ichigo always seemed mostly indifferent to him - even when he admitted he'd come to fight him it wasn't about Grimmjow at all, but more as an obstacle to his personal growth (defeat the guy who beat him before to prove his strength to himself) and saving Orihime.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I think you've just nailed why people ship it. Grimmjow was extremely fixated on Ichigo and add in Ichigo's indifference and the animosity, and it isn't hard to see why people ship it.

What's your Ichigo slash ship? If you have one. What slash ship sid you think would be the biggest in the fandom? Uryuu/Ichigo?

A part of me wonders if knowledge of the fact that Cap/Tony is a famous pairing from comics fandom gave a lot of MCU fans the impetus to ship the two pretty guys, even if the fans weren't originally from Marvel comics fandom themselves.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt; New MCU fans jumping on what comics fans were bringing to it makes sense. I didn't really get into MCU fandom until after Avengers I Steve/Tony always seemed weirdly prevalent even accounting for comic fans carrying over their ship.

I guess I say that because I feel like MCU Steve/Tony became a popular ship before the Avengers movie even came out. Honestly, I just don't understand it myself.

DARCY/BUCKY! I see that all the time and I have NO idea where it came from. Is she in the comics or something?

No she isn't, thank the gods.

ayrt; The only thing I could think of is that it was a self-insert the author didn't want to advertize as a self-insert, or Bucky was another notch on the Darcy fan's list to pair her with.

Also Bucky/Jemma - like, okay, I've actually read one and it was cute, but it's sch a far-fetched ship.

Sakura becomes the worst version of herself around Sasuke and I could never in my life understand why people are drawn to that.

Itachi/Kisame though... did you not read Kisame's swansong chapter? It seemed he cared a weird amount about his ex-partner, enough to remember him as he was dying.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt; I did forget about Kisame's dying chapter. Rereading it I can see where some people would get shipping material from it, but it still seems more like a friendship poised on turning against each other than potential romance.

Tbh, I don't see how people can ship Sasuke with anyone. He is just so fucking terrible.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt; It was easier before he he learned the truth about Itachi. After that he steadily started to care only about himself, before that he was self-centered but still cared about some people.

I don't know about the comics, but they had next to no chemistry together in The Avengers to me.

Oh yeah, there was definitely ship material in the comics (an alternate universe version of them even got married in the comics though Tony was a chick in that reality). I couldn't care less about MCU Steve/Tony though. Even if they ended up having slashy scenes together in later films I still don't think I would ship them.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt; I don't think I'd ship them either if they had good scenes in the coming movies, even if I wasn't so staunchly a Tony/Pepper shipper. They both have much stronger and more dynamic relationships with other characters (especially Steve) that shipping them has no interest to me.

re: Lisa and Dean, the problem is less that she's a consolation prize and more that she's a symbol, not a character. She's kind of a gesture towards the life that Dean could have and the kind of person he'd be with if he could have a normal life, but they don't develop her beyond that. Her character is that she's good and empathetic and caring, but none of that issues into any real actions she takes or anything, because those just aren't the plots she's in.

TBH, a lot of the time, I'd be more interested in someone using an OC if they wanted to tell that kind of story, rather than Lisa, because at least they can come up with an interesting OC from scratch.

Re: Pairings you don't get

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt; Yes, that's it exactly. In her first episode she was interesting and if they'd built on the potential there she'd have been a fantastic match for Dean, but she got boxed into 'Dean's perfect Apple-Pie life' and suffered for it.

Jensen Ackles said at a recent con that Lisa and Ben were basically there to show that Dean just *could not * have that life. He tried, for a year, to be a normal guy and he just couldn't sustain it. He could barely even *do* it, paranoid and still drinking every night even when he was there for a year.

He said he loved her, but Dean can basically never be that guy.

IDK, I wouldn't have thought to ship it but I would read Darcy/Bucky. I can see the thought behind it as being that she would treat him just as a person, no baggage of history, having only heard about his assassinry 2nd hand, being used to dealing with weird shit. I wouldn't ship it as an epic romance but I could get behind some cuteness with a h/c flavor.

I ship Steve/Tony in the comics and IA about their MCU counterparts, it's really not the same and tbh it seems like people are shipping them anyway just because.

I don't get Sasuke/anyone but then I can't stand the little shit.

Ew ew ew. I'm a H/G shipper and I HATE that reasoning. First, while Ginny is also a redhead, I see her as more ginger. Lily, not so much. Second, I've always felt that Ron was more James than Harry, incidentally - Harry's more Sirius 2.0. Which makes Hermione Lily, I guess? But even then, not really. They're their own people.

But yeah, I first fell in love with H/G because I liked how direct Ginny was with him in OoTP. I love Ron and Hermione and their friendship with Harry, I would never undermind that, but sometimes Ginny was the only one who could really get through to him. I liked that.

Main reason I ship Itachi/Kisame is because Kisame seemed to have been the only person Itachi had regular contact with whom he didn't loathe or was related to. And because they clearly had respect for each other, if nothing else, which, with vicious and arrogant characters like those, I feel says a lot.

Sakura does, indeed, deserve better. But good god are they pretty together in fanart.
