Re: Pairings you don't get

Clint/Coulson!

The most obvious reason it became a thing is the fact that people wanted to ship a slash pairing in Thor that wasn't incest. Slim pickings. Plus there is the potential for a dynamic fandom likes, which is snarky badass + rule abiding badass (see also: Steve/Tony, whether or not the characterization works).

Under that rational, a bunch of prompts started happening on the kink meme. Some of these prompts resulting in really, really good fic. I ship almost everything in the MCU (or read ship fic of it, anyway) and the best fics in that fandom are almost all Clint/Coulson, imo, and it sort of got the ball rolling.

Another contributor to the popularity of the pairing, though, is the sheer WTF-ness of it. People go through a cycle where they don't understand where it comes from, they try some of the (really good, like I said) fic, and then suddenly there's potential. Most of the C/C fans I know came to the pairing that way.

Oh, and it didn't, at the time, break up any canon relationships in the MCU. Some people have problems with that.

Ahaaa, yeah I can totally get the WTF-ness drawing people in, I've ended up with ships like that before now.

But with these points explained I get more where it comes from. Thank you. :)
