I'm late to the party but...

I totally agree. I read The Hobbit and enjoyed it, but I had no sense of the Dwarves as individuals. They were just there, en masse, in different coloured hoods and uh, that's it. I loved the scene in the first film when the Dwarves arrived, and got far more of an idea of the individuals and why we should care about them from that than I got from the whole of the book.
