You know, before these movies, I barely even remembered anything about The Hobbit (which says something for how long ago I read the book, I suppose). The thing is, once reminded, I did recall how damn little the book has of characterisation for anyone except Bilbo. We almost don't know anything about most of the dwarves, other than they're there.

So on a whole I do love that the movies have actually made something out of all of them, and yes, I do like that we have more insight into Thorin.

I am, however, thinking that it will be a real killer to see how far he slips into madness in the third movie.

I'm late to the party but...

I totally agree. I read The Hobbit and enjoyed it, but I had no sense of the Dwarves as individuals. They were just there, en masse, in different coloured hoods and uh, that's it. I loved the scene in the first film when the Dwarves arrived, and got far more of an idea of the individuals and why we should care about them from that than I got from the whole of the book.
