I care very much about the characters you were intended to care about. The ones who were supposed to be two dimensional Heroes in the classical vein, not so much. But the films are not trying to accomplish the same thing, and so made Aragorn, Thorin etc modern and "relateable". Which is totally fine, but not a criticism of Tolkien.
