I find this true of most Tolkien characters that got adapted to film. Something weird about those books -- they were so effective at getting you hooked on the universe they were set in, and so bad at making you care about the characters on a personal level.

Except for The Silmarillion. When will all these morally grey badasses get their adaptation already?

I don't think characterization was always Tolkien's strongsuit. He was great at worldbuiding. But a lot of the times the characters were more archetypes than fully fleshed out. But in my mind that's totally okay. But the movies are a completely different thing, and I still do love the movie characterization.

I think Tolkien would be a bit pissed off at what's been called "worldbuilding" in his name. I don't think he's much of a worldbuilder given the motorcycle horses, little anachronisms, and stuff that doesn't quite make sense.

I care very much about the characters you were intended to care about. The ones who were supposed to be two dimensional Heroes in the classical vein, not so much. But the films are not trying to accomplish the same thing, and so made Aragorn, Thorin etc modern and "relateable". Which is totally fine, but not a criticism of Tolkien.
