Oh! Then I want to ask you the question that I asked below!

Are you using your fanfic name (or any variation of it) for your original stuff? (I mean your statement implies no but I should probably make sure...)

And if not, why not?

I, uh, may be wrestling with this question at the moment.

I think I answered you below? Let me know if I didn't. :)

Some resources I found helpful:

Hugh Howey's blog
Dean Wesley Smith's blog
Joe Konrath's blog
KBoard's Writer's Cafe (message board - good for technical questions)
Amazon's publishing KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) pages

If you can hire or swap for editing help, it will help your books go a long way, if you decide to publish. :)

Also, I pretty much can't overstate how much more good cover art helps. It makes the whole story look far more professional.

Don't be afraid to try things and find your own path, though! And don't let me scare you off. I started off doing everything myself and only recently started outsourcing some things.

If you can, find a support system, because it can be stressful when your masterpiece doesn't sell. (And not every story will sell well.) Sometimes you have to put out several stories (or more) before you get more than a trickle of sales. I'm OK with that because I love doing this. I'm driven to write, and I wouldn't stop if I had to pay to do it. But sometimes ya gotta dig deep. ;)

I've rambled on long enough. Hope you find your path, whatever you choose. :)

You definitely answered me below! (And I responded before seeing this message. Sorry!)

Thank you so much!

All of this is really, really helpful, and that's definitely stuff that I've been trying to work out. I can't want to dig into those resources. (I've read bits of Konrath, and I've been trying to weigh up the pros/cons of KDP against Smashwords. But I hadn't found any of the rest of that. So thank you again!)

I never used anything that looked like a name for fandom to begin with, only a username. (I go by Rain, but that's a very obvious abbreviation of the username.) If I ever did publish anything, it'd probably be under my real name.

Thanks! (I was wondering how common the Cassandra Claire model is.) My fandom username isn't really name-ish either, but if Avi can write under a nickname, I can write under a username if I want to.
