If you can hire or swap for editing help, it will help your books go a long way, if you decide to publish. :)

Also, I pretty much can't overstate how much more good cover art helps. It makes the whole story look far more professional.

Don't be afraid to try things and find your own path, though! And don't let me scare you off. I started off doing everything myself and only recently started outsourcing some things.

If you can, find a support system, because it can be stressful when your masterpiece doesn't sell. (And not every story will sell well.) Sometimes you have to put out several stories (or more) before you get more than a trickle of sales. I'm OK with that because I love doing this. I'm driven to write, and I wouldn't stop if I had to pay to do it. But sometimes ya gotta dig deep. ;)

All of this is really, really helpful, and that's definitely stuff that I've been trying to work out. I can't want to dig into those resources. (I've read bits of Konrath, and I've been trying to weigh up the pros/cons of KDP against Smashwords. But I hadn't found any of the rest of that. So thank you again!)
