Duolingo

I know some of you here are on it, because it was mentioned in a thread here before.

So, I started using it, mostly to refresh a few languages that I'm not sing so much. But, I wonder, does it actually culminate in something? Does it have an "end"?

Also I find myself instinctively understanding sentences, but I find it harder to write them down in English. I wonder if it's supposed to be like that, or if it's just me.

It does have an end. All you are doing is completing your language tree.

Personally, I find writing the sentences down in English easier. I am lousy with grammar and I can figure out what they are trying to say by picking out each word and solving it that way. 99% of the time I am right. Every so often I'll come across a sentence, most likely a slang saying, that will throw me for a loop.

Then it's just the way I learn, I guess.

I never really knew grammar for anything, just sort of went with it by instinct.

Sometimes I run into a sentence that's easier to understand by meaning than to phrase in English, but it's probably mostly your style. And yes, the end of the tree is the end of the lessons. You can get a little certificate when you finish :)

Aw, that's sort of cute.

I've just started it, and thus far I am finding memrise's format to be easier, but that may be just because I am used to memrise, and Duolingo certainly has some advantages.

One of those is the voice test thing, but it can be fooled. I was asked for the spanish for "I am a girl" and I couldn't remember so I said it in gàidhlig and passed even though the gàidhlig had several more syllables. I sent recordings of me saying both "Soy Niña" and "Tha mi nithean" to a friend and she agreed they don't sound alike.

I currently disabled the microphone as it just didn't work half of the time.

I would, but it's relaxing to yell at it until it either understands (or misunderstands) or it just gives up.

I'm also using both, and I prefer Duolingo's set-up. There's only so much vocab a person can learn before she realizes she has no idea how to use it in a sentence!

But yeah, I'm someone who still misses the way Memrise worked in the beta & am still very bitter about all the changes. It's nice that it has so many more languages, though.
